Based on Sylvia Plath's novel of the same title, The Bell Jar tells the story of a gifted young woman's mental breakdown beginning during a summer internship as a junior editor at a magazine in New York City in the early 1950s. The novel remains one of the best-told tales of a woman's descent into insanity. Julia Stiles, who will star as Esther Greenwood, has been working on developing Plath’s novel into a film for over five years. The film is currently in development and is expected to start filming in 2010.

Rose McGowan plays Doreen, a fun, wild and rebellious friend of Esther’s.
