She likes fast cars, classic films of the 1940’s, wears high heels despite an injured ankle. She became an actress by chance. The charming Rose McGowan talked about the beginnings of her career, work with Tarantino and Rodriguez and her passion for action movies.
She never wanted to be an actress. She moved to Los Angeles from rainy Seattle, lived with her boyfriend and wanted to start college. At that moment, her boyfriend died. Totally devastated, she lived at her friends’ place and a friend of a friend offered her first film acting role. She refused, but when she realised that thanks to the film she could make money and buy herself a flat, she changed her mind.
Rose McGowan is very closely tied to her siblings. She talked proudly of what they do now and how great and adventurous their childhood was. “We would go to the police station, tell that we escaped from home and come from a different town. They would give us money for a bus and we were going to the town we never before visited. Thus we saw many places.” Her childhood not always was this carefree. At the age of 14 she worked at a funeral home, and a year later she lost the roof above her head.
Have we got another rare treat for all of you McGowaniacs today or what! Like I’ve said before, it is not often that we come across never-before-seen older photos of Rose these days. However, our much loyal forum member and site contributor Brandon aka mcgowanfan snagged this rare issue of Glamour Italia, dating back to August 1997, which features a breathtaking editorial and an interview with Ms. McGowan that I know I’ve never seen before! And isn’t it absolutely gorgeous!
Please respect the site and Brandon’s kindness of sharing the scans with fellow fans by not re-posting the images on other websites and forums. Many thanks in advance!

Update: Many thanks to Laura’s hard work, we now have an English translation of Rose’s interview in the library, Glamour Italia: Portrait of an Actress!
Cinema can’t tame me. If they like me, good, but I would have an interesting life anyway.

In honor of the release of Scream 4 this Friday, EW is looking back at the original 1996 film and talking to cast members about their best production memories. Rose McGowan played Tatum Riley, the spunky best friend to Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott and sister to David Arquette’s Dewey. McGowan’s most famous moment came when Tatum was attacked by Ghostface in her boyfriend’s garage and defended herself by throwing beer bottles. Says McGowan, “I’m known to have the worst aim on the planet, and so when I was throwing the beer bottles [at Ghostface], I shattered the lens of the camera.” EW talked to McGowan about the original Scream, dying her hair blonde for the role, and the time she and Arquette crashed a prom party.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Do you remember reading the script for the first time?
ROSE MCGOWAN: I thought it was a fantastic script when I got it. I was so green — I didn’t really have a good reference point for a whole lot other than that I like a good story and it was certainly a good yarn. I really liked the character a lot. The inside scoop is that I auditioned for it and then they made me an offer, and then they got so pissed off with what my lawyer, who was way too aggressive, countered with. They pulled their offer and made me come back in and re-test twice and didn’t give me a cent over what their original offer was for because they were so pissed off at my lawyer.
Do you still have that same lawyer?
No. No. And at this point, they’d they’d just cast Neve — as film rules go, you can’t have two people that have dark hair. So I’m sitting in a meeting with Cathy Conrad, the producer, who’s blond, and I just found out that they cast a brunette, and I said, “Cathy, I really want to make my hair blond. Who’s your colorist?” And it was like a light blub went on over their head. I was shuttled off to Cathy’s colorist, and I got a nice shade of Middle American blond. I hated that color. It was perfect for the role.
Rose McGowan is doing her best to look as young as she can for as long as possible.
The actress, 37, shares her beauty do’s and don’ts – and one the facet of her life that grows more precious with time.
When it comes to her beauty do’s, Rose rattles off a few top tips as her boyfriend Rob Adams stands in the background.
“Always use moisturizer, and always wash your face,” she tells me at A Fool’s Fete Spring Dance hosted by New Yorkers for Children to benefit youth in foster care held Tuesday at Mandarin Oriental in NYC.
What’s her beauty don’t?
“Don’t smoke,” she tells me. “You’ll look like an old hag if you smoke!”
One “old thing” she holds onto is her Scream buddies.
“Of course I’ll go see Scream 4,” she says. “I’m excited about seeing the old gang. I see Neve [Campbell] from time to time, I see Courteney [Cox] from time to time, and I see David [Arquette] more than anybody.”
