Next week, actress Rose McGowan will be appearing on the big screen as Marique, a beautiful and deadly witch in director Marcus Nispel’s Conan: The Barbarian. However, not too long ago, McGowan was set to headline her own swords-and-sandals epic spinning out of the world of Conan as the title character in Robert Rodriguez’s Red Sonja. Rodriguez has said in the past that the movie never happened because of rights and financing issues, but McGowan revealed in a recent interview in support of Conan: The Barbarian that “massive nerve damage” in her arm ultimately prevented her from playing the “She-Devil with a Sword.”
I had three surgeries on [my elbow] and they took part of my bone out. I was paralyzed, except for the ends of my fingers. And, over the course of a year, it got progressively worse. It was just massive nerve damage. So, if I hurt it again, there’s nothing more they can do. So, something’s that really sword-heavy, the odds of me getting hurt are pretty strong. I’ll still do battle stuff. I love doing stunts, it’s my favorite thing. I always get hurt, but I have a blast. But, I need to not tip the scales because paralysis isn’t really worth it. Not worth the movie… It would have been dope. Honestly, I would have killed it. It is a pity.
Chelsea Lately’s official youtube channel has posted the video of Rose McGowan’s interview. You can watch it below. Rose is adorable!
The gallery has been updated with 400+ screencaps of Miss Rose’s super fun appearance on E!’s Chelsea Lately yesterday (August 9). I went a little crazy with the amount of caps but simply because Rose is so lovely and animated and makes the cutest faces. I will try and bring you a video clip of the interview tomorrow so stay tuned for that!

Being an actor is a dangerous business. Just ask Rose McGowan, who stars in the Conan the Barbarian reboot that opens Aug. 19. It’s her first film in years, despite the fact that at Comic-Con 2008 she was touted as the star of Simon West’s planned 2009 return to the Red Sonja tale. That one went by the wayside when McGowan trashed herself on the set of Planet Terror.
“Look at my elbow,” she said at the L.A. press junket for Conan. “I’ve had three surgeries on it and have had part of it taken out. That was from a stunt gone wrong, where I did a handspring backwards. So, during the course of that year it became basically paralyzed except for half of two of my fingers. After three surgeries with massive nerve damage and the bone being taken out and a year of rehab, they’re like, ‘You could go do a sword movie, but we can’t do anything more with your arm if you hurt it.’ As dope as it would’ve been, I would really rather not go through life with one arm that’s paralyzed and in constant pain.”
And that’s not even the end of it. When McGowan was finally ready to return to the job, she got injured yet again. She made it through Conan unscathed, but not for long.
I have very exciting news to bring you today… Be sure to mark your calendars because Miss McGowan will appear on Chelsea Lately on E! on Tuesday, August 9, to promote Conan the Barbarian!
If there’s anyone out there who would be able to help with a video clip of Rose’s appearance, please get in touch. It would be very much appreciated since we are unable to record footage ourselves at the moment. Thank you in advance.
Huge thanks to our friend Mariana for contributing these stunning photos.

She may be almost entirely unrecognizable, but yes, that is Rose McGowan rocking the porcelain skin, minimal leather outfit and, well, receding hairline in the trailer for Conan the Barbarian. She stars as the evil Marique, a powerful sorceress and the daughter of the ruthless Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang), Conan’s (Jason Momoa) archenemy.
With the film’s August 19th release on the horizon, McGowan hit San Diego Comic-Con to help spread the word. She dishes on all of the details including what it took to turn her into the character we see on screen, Marique’s weapon of choice, her daddy issues, as well as a moment between her and Lang that had to be cut from the film, for the fear of pushing a testy issue too far.
Before wrapping up, we revisit the much-discussed possibility of her playing Red Sonja on the big screen. The outlook’s been grim for quite a while and now McGowan 100% confirms it: She will not play Red Sonja. Hear all about that and, of course, McGowan’s experience working on Conan the Barbarian in the video interview below.
Meeting Rose McGowan over the weekend at Comic-Con, she instinctively offered her left hand first. Having injured her other arm weeks ago in the goriest window-related accident I’ve ever heard, she’d flown into San Diego to promote this summer’s Conan the Barbarian, touted as one of the bloodiest action pics of the year. But to hear her tell it, Conan the Barbarian’s got nothing on McGowan’s last few years when it comes to struggle and pain — and yet, she credits the summer swords ‘n’ sorcery pic with changing her mind about quitting Hollywood.
McGowan points to a number of events that brought her to the brink of retirement a few years ago: “Mean directors,” major injuries, family illness. She was to star in updates of Red Sonja and Barbarella, both with former partner Robert Rodriguez, before the pair split and both projects fell apart, one by her choice, the other not. After two years “out of the game,” she took the role of Marique, a half-witch, half-human villainess with a freaky look and an even freakier psyche, in Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian — and the hard-R fantasy actioner re-ignited something within.
Movieline spoke with McGowan in San Diego about the injuries that led to her pulling out of Red Sonja, the reason why Rodriguez’s Barbarella remake stalled, how playing the witch with seductive claws and serious daddy issues in Conan revived her passion for acting, and why she might yet move to a farm in Italy in the near future.
[McGowan offers her left hand, pointing to her still-injured right forearm] I went through a window.
As previously reported, Rose McGowan was in San Diego this past weekend for the 2011 Comic-Con convention. Rose attended a couple of events in addition to her booth, those being WIRED Cafe and Entertainment Weekly‘s 5th Annual Comic-Con Celebration. She looked gorgeous at both events! For the latter event Rose rocked a strapless denim dress by Isabel Marant. She paired the look with soft side swept curls and bright pink lips.

SuperHeroHype.com sat down with Rose McGowan a few days into Comic-Con to learn what she brought to the world of Conan the Barbarian and how working on Planet Terror nearly put her out of the action game for good. Watch the video interview below!
