Rose McGowan leads a “charmed life,” but she’s far from your typical A-list star.

The 39-year-old opened up to omg! in a candid interview over a couple glasses of Apothic Rosé wine at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City and dished about everything from redecorating homes to her obsession with pasta and Taco Bell.

No joke: she can recite her Taco Bell take-out order on command – “Taco Fresca and Bean and Cheese Burrito, no onions, add sour cream, two dollars and 46 cents at the window, thank you” – and enjoy a couple glasses of wine on a Friday night, just like the next girl.

Since we’re toasting with wine, you obviously like to drink it, right?

Rosé is actually primarily what I do drink. I’ll drink it all season, so what’s great about this Apothic Rosé, is that it’s cool that they’re calling it after me – just kidding – but it’s a limited edition… so it makes it kind of extra special.

Are you a two-glass wine girl?

I’m a two-glass girl.

After two glasses, there’s a chance that one makes bad decisions…

Well, after two glasses, then there’s another decision. If you get to the third glass, then you have a bad decision of getting to the next glass, and then you have a bad, bad day the next day. I get hung over really easily.

Have you ever made a bad decision after drinking wine?

I’ve noticed that my IQ goes down about 10 to 15 points with each glass of wine. So if we go past two, yeah. I think everyone’s kissed somebody that you really regret, right? Then you see them the next day or, for me, get a photo with someone, and you’re like, what was I thinking? Oh my god. That’s definitely [the worst]. I don’t have beer goggles, but you can have wine goggles. I’m not a beer girl.

Why not beer?

It’s not classy. It’s just not. I just feel like it’s not chic.

We’re talking about booze, but what about food? Do you ever cook for anyone?

I do. I only know how to make pasta, though, because I grew up in Italy. I probably eat pasta five or six days a week, like usually before I go to bed. And somehow I don’t gain weight.

That’s pretty impressive.

I think growing up in Italy, you just metabolize it differently and you just get used to it. Last night I had a huge bowl of pasta at the hotel and then passed out. I could live on pasta.

Let’s talk fashion — what is chic in your opinion?

I think not caring. I care about things I care about, but I mean, not caring what others think.

You’re always switching up your hair color. Which one is your fave?

I probably get the most response when I have really long, pretty, dark hair. I still consider myself, like I have dark hair. It’s tricky, because my boyfriend only likes brunette … In Los Angeles, you’re told that you have to look approachable and palatable, and I realize that I scare all those men anyway. Screw them – I do what I want.

What’s your favorite restaurant right now?

I like Sushi Nozawa, and then I like Jan’s Diner, which is right next to my favorite Taco Bell on Beverly Boulevard by La Cienega. I eat really high-end food and then Taco Bell.

We know you like real estate. Does Ginnifer Goodwin really live in your old house?

Well, actually Rachel Bilson bought it from me. Then Busy Philipps bought it from her. And then Ginnifer lives there now. It’s like only actresses live there. It’s really funny. It’s my house that I bought and restored.

Each of you has such a unique sense of style….

Probably. It was funny when I sold it, since it was the first house I totally restored. The night that it closed, I had nightmares that Rachel Bilson went to Pottery Barn and put in purple velvet curtains.

Do you like to buy houses and redecorate them?

I do. I restore 1920s houses primarily. I’ve done four so far.

How would you describe your style?

Well, now my house is from 1961, and it’s all very ‘70s. It’s very Halston. It’s kind of a rebirth. I went through a big breakup and some other stuff, and I just needed a total and complete change. It’s kind of like I wanted Palm Springs in L.A., but I wanted it with like a real ‘70s chic French and Italian sensibility, not ‘70s American. The 1970s Italian and French [style] is very money.

Another spin on the classic and truly twisted Edgar Allan Poe tale The Tell Tale Heart will be causing a stir at this year’s Cannes Film Market.

From the press release:

Darclight Films, the edgy genre-driven label of Arclight Films, announces the acquisition and release of first-look footage of John La Tier’s inspired directorial debut The Tell Tale Heart starring Rose McGowan (Grindhouse, TVs Charmed, Jawbreaker, Scream), Peter Bogdanovich (The Sopranos, Humboldt County, Festival In Cannes, TVs “The Simpsons“) and Patrick John Flueger (Footloose, Brothers, TVs “The 4400“). Based on the classic short story of the same name penned by Edgar Allan Poe, America’s first master of horror over 150 years ago, La Tier, who also co-wrote the script, transplants the gloomy Gothic story into vibrant and enchanting modern day New Orleans. Darclight Films will be sharing never-before-seen footage in Cannes.

“We’re thrilled to present The Tell Tale Heart to buyers for the very first time, and Cannes is the perfect place to do so,” said Clay Epstein, VP of Sales and Acquisitions for Arclight Films, who secured the deal. “It’s one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most well known stories, and only a few others have been translated into as many languages worldwide as The Tell Tale Heart. The combination of the incredibly talented team of cast and crew that have come together to give new life to a truly classic and horrifying tale and a built-in global audience give the film outstanding commercial viability.”

The Tell Tale Heart remains true to the original insofar as the story’s protagonist is tormented by the still-beating heart of the old vulture-eyed man he murdered and buried beneath the floorboards of his residence. The film grows the tale and expands the character’s troubled mindscape to include a hauntingly romantic arc illuminated by McGowan. The filmmakers were adamant about maintaining a fervent connection to the classic and world-renowned tale’s literary roots.

“It’s arguably the seed of the entire genre,” said La Tier, who was compelled to resurrect Poe’s story albeit with a twist. Certainly Poe created a unique and starkly terrifying approach to horror fiction. He placed his readers in the minds of his mad characters and so had a way of leaving his readers feeling insane themselves. “The fear of the characters became the fear of the readers. I wanted to remain true to that while broadening the character’s psyche through the introduction of a female element to hint at the possibility of redemption, something entirely missing in Poe’s sublime version,” stated La Tier.

Moving the location of The Tell Tale Heart to New Orleans was a stroke of inspired creativity. “I think the city is definitely a character,” said McGowan. “If there was going to be a city with a heartbeat under its floorboards, New Orleans is it.”

“The director, John La Tier, did a magnificent job of encapsulating the essence of Poe’s classic story with a modern surprise while capturing the soul of one of the most unique cities in the world,” according to Executive Producer, Joey Tufaro.

The Tell Tale Heart was produced by Daniel Zirilli via Popart Film Factory and Leverage Entertainment.

Darclight Films is handling worldwide sales.

On April 24, Rose McGowan unveiled the limited edition Apothic Rose rosé wine at the rooftop terrace of the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City.

Rose stunned in a jewel toned jumpsuit that she paired with black Sergio Rossi pumps (it was her first night back in heels after she injured her foot and had to wear a boot!). She styled her new blonde locks in a low bun with a pompadour for a bit of extra volume and confessed to Examiner that yes, she is having more fun as a blonde! Such a fun look to boot!

As you may have noticed, I added a handful of images from the Apothic Rose Wine Launch in the gallery a couple of days back.

Enjoy!

Rose McGowan is letting her hairstyle go to her head.

The newly platinum blond actress says her look is giving her a toughness she hadn’t had before. “Part of [going blond] is because I’ve been told [brunettes] look accessible and pleasing to the men in L.A. so as not to scare them. But then I realized I always scare them so f— it — I’m just going to do whatever I want and I’ve always wanted short platinum blond hair so screw it….The men in Hollywood aren’t men men — they’re guys like [whispers] Judd Apatow.”

She says this last part while making a face to suggest that Apatow doesn’t chop his own wood, and adds, “Real men are hard to come by.”

McGowan is so fierce during our recent interview on the Rooftop Terrace at Gramercy Park Hotel, it is hard to believe that the whole point in her talking to me is to promote the limited edition rose wine, Apothic Rose (pronounced like the flower, hence the hiring of McGowan; get it?).

Simply put, she seems like the type of female to slam back some tequila shots while bemoaning the state of Hollywood instead of sipping on wine.

“I only drink Rosé, isn’t that funny?” she says in a way that makes me feel it isn’t contractually obligated. “I like it ghetto style — I usually pop an ice cube in it to chill it and take the sweetness out of it.”

McGowan came to the hotel fresh off of a flight from Australia, where she’s working on a piece for Ridley Scott’s Black Dog Films. “I’m determined to change the demographic of the DGA — the f—ers. All old white men,” she says with a shake of her head.

If you can’t tell by now, McGowan isn’t afraid to let loose on the current battle of the sexes in Hollywood. “It’s all frat guys; they condone sexism. The execs and the agents. They are people who went to law school and it wasn’t sexy enough so they wanted to come have sex with actresses. It’s not like they want to be a part of great film making or anything.”

Considering McGowan’s current stance on the other sex, it’s surprising to learn she has a boyfriend, the performance artist and DJ, Davey Detail (“I’m not a dater,” she says, seriously. “I’m a serial monogamist.”).

But just because she’s in love doesn’t mean she’s going to do what he likes. She points to her hair: “He likes long, dark hair. So I’m like: ‘Suck it!.’”

These days, our knowledge of celebrities too often originates with paparazzi images and snarky quotes by anonymous “insiders.” After a while, it’s easy to forget that stars are real people. That’s why HuffPost Celebrity decided to launch its all-new #nofilter quick-fire question-and-answer series. Because how well do you know someone until they’ve shared their guiltiest pleasures?

Who knew that Rose McGowan only drank rosé wines? Cheesy as it may sound, the 39-year-old Once Upon A Time actress dryly admitted to Huffington Post Celebrity that the pink drink was her sole wine of choice as we caught up with her Wednesday at New York’s Gramercy Hotel, where she was promoting a limited edition of Apothic Rose Wine. Sitting cross-legged on a plush couch, McGowan also told us about how she’s transitioning from acting to directing, what she does to relax and that time she may or may not have stolen a car.

How did you get involved with Apothic Rose Wine?
Well ironically, I only drink rose wine, for real. I was lucky to become involved with this company, and Apothic Rose is such a cool name, it’s very strong. And I love that it’s seasonal, so just a special, short-time-only thing. It’s like wearing an evening gown and then you have to return it.

How often do you drink wine?
Oh every day, in the morning. [Laughs] Probably three or four times a week. In Los Angeles, you have a great outside area, outside fireplace, so my friends sit around it and actually drink this.

What’s been keeping you busy?
I just directed something for Ridley Scott’s company, RSA Black Dog; it’s his commerical music video division. It’s a short film set in 1961. I wanted to explore young women’s sexual politics of that era before it turned into the late ’60s. That’s a tiny moment in time, it’s almost as if after Kennedy got shot, all the innocence went away. Also all of those ’50s moms telling you what you had to be like, what you had to do. So I wanted to explore that tiny twilight period of the ’60s. I also found another feature to direct in the next five or six months. I’m acting of course still, but I look at it more like waitressing. It’s going to be my day job.

So you want to make the transition from being in front of the camera to being behind it?
Yeah. And I don’t want to be on camera, I don’t want to direct myself. I was never trying to be an actor, so I’ve never had any great desire to be on screen. I know I’m good at what I do, but I could take it or leave it.

How did people react to you after you did Grindhouse, in which your character has a machine gun as a prosthetic leg?
They come up to you and they’re like, “Oh, you grew your leg back!” I deal with that about five times a day.

Have you ever stolen anything?
I stole a wallet at a movie theater once. A woman next to me had left it and it had all her IDs in it, but I didn’t give it back to her. It didn’t have any money, I think I just needed a wallet at the time. I felt so bad about it that I never stole anything again. I was 14. Oh, I guess I also stole a car, but that’s a whole other story.

What’s one question you wouldn’t ask yourself?
Do you believe in magic?

What do you wear to bed?
Underwear. I’m sorry, but I can’t get up and catch a robber in the middle of the night with no panties on.

If you were on death row, what would your last meal be?
Rice pudding. Kozy Shack brand.

How did you get on death row?
Shooting people who kill animals.

What’s the first thing you reach for when you need to decompress?
I can’t say. [beat] It’s legal in California though.

The actress and Apothic Rose spokeswoman shares her entertaining secrets, how she became a social media sensation, and why kicking ass must be part of her job.

On why she’s thrilled to be wearing heels: “Today is my first day not wearing a boot. I broke my toes when my boyfriend picked me up to give me a kiss, and he let me go unexpectedly. It’s my third boot in four years. Before, I ran into a wall. Another time, I hit a doorframe. Usually I’m moving too quickly. My body’s still doing the last thing and I’m onto the next thing. I’ve shut my head in the car door. It’s really embarrassing and it hurts.”

On her next movie, Rise of the Lonestar Ranger: “I’ve always wanted to be the kick-ass, guy gunslinger, and unfortunately I had to be the saloon lady. But I did get to stab somebody in the leg, so that was cool. At least I got to kick some ass. It’s like a prerequisite for me. I have to kick some ass on some level.”

On what she serves guests: “I cook only pastas and cakes, so it’s pretty much exclusively carbs if you’re coming to my house. I grew up in Italy eating pasta — I probably eat it four to five times a week. I don’t like canned sauce, and the key to mine is putting in a balance of red wine and sugar. I also love aglio e ollo, garlic and olive oil, really simple. Pasta and a glass of wine is the best thing ever.”

On how she drives her friends crazy: “At parties, we play a lot of Catch Phrase!, which is really hard. As you continue drinking, it gets harder. I’m really aggressive with games — I’m kind of not that fun to play with. I get super-competitive, and I have my friends going, ‘it’s just a game. Relax.’ I’m the annoying one.”

On her secret to a great party: “Always have wine. Always have social lubrication, my friend.”

On her Tumblr’s Webby nomination for Best Celebrity/Fan Website: “There’s no way I’m going to win. It’s me up against all these huge companies. I’m David and they’re all Goliaths. I’ve sent out one tweet about it because it seems self-aggrandizing to be like, ‘vote for me.’ I get embarrassed about that stuff.”

However, my computer is finally back up and running and I had a moment to update the gallery with photos from the majority of the events that Rose McGowan attended in 2013 thus far.

How the hell do you even describe Rose McGowan? She’s the girl you want to hang out with, even though you know she’s trouble. She’s mean and moody and almost certainly carrying a concealed weapon of some sort, but when she likes you, she makes you feel like the only other person in the world. “I guess I always thought of my characters as these little tough things who seemed strong, but if you pushed them, they would crack,” she says. This statement, it seems, describes McGowan herself as much as it does her roles.

Her big break came as a troubled teen on an inadvertent killing spree in Gregg Araki’s cult classic, The Doom Generation. Since then, she has suffered death by garage door in Scream, and taught a jock how to go down on a popsicle in Jawbreaker. She was a good witch onCharmed, and an evil queen in Conan The Barbarian. That’s to say nothing of the time she played a stripper with a machine gun leg in the splatter-fest that was Planet Terror.

Ahead of her appearance at the Supanova pop culture convention, we spoke to McGowan about these various iconic roles. We discussed her predilection for playing weirdos and outsiders, and the “trial by fire” that was her first big acting job. Most surprising of all was the revelation that, after two decades in the business, McGowan may be ready to give up acting all together.

Junkee: The characters you play are often dark, and even a little bit evil. What is it that draws you to those sorts of roles?
Rose McGowan: Well, I like things that are funny, actually, and I think I excel at comedy in a lot of ways. When you play evil, you often have the exact same beats as you would play in a comedy. When I’m doing a very over-the-top, evil character, I will often start laughing as soon as the director says ‘cut’, just laughing at myself.

There’s something really joyous about the idea of just being really, really evil.
Sometimes it’s so absurd, it’s hilarious. In Conan The Barbarian, I have these long, claw things, and I’m trying to find a virgin so I can slit her throat or something with these crazy nails. When I hear ‘cut’ in that situation, I just immediately start laughing because it’s ridiculous!

So I was a huge fan of The Doom Generation growing up…
Aww!

The film is about a group of teens who find themselves on a cross-country killing spree, and it features a lot of gory violence and out-there sexual stuff. When you were making it, did it feel like you were doing something a little bit shocking or dangerous?
Well, the funny thing is that I’d never acted before, so I had no frame of reference for what was normal or abnormal on a movie set, or even what I was supposed to be doing. I based my character on myself when I was 15, which is to say I was very surly and sullen and occasionally snarky. There were so many sexual references in the film, but the truth is that I didn’t understand half of them; I didn’t know what people were talking about! People would always tell me that I’d played a brave role, and I’d say ‘oh, thanks!’ without really understanding why. It wasn’t until about a year ago, when I was doing the DVD commentary with the director Gregg Araki and some of the other actors, that I watched it again, and I was shocked by some of the things I said! All these people had said I was brave, but the truth is, it came out of ignorance and idiocy because I had no idea what was going on.

Gregg Araki is a fascinating figure. What was it like working with him?
It was a trial by fire, because he is very intense on set. I’d never worked with other directors, so I didn’t understand what it was like or that he was different. There was no ad-libbing, so all these crazy dialogue things had to sound completely natural, although I understood that to be my job. He was very demanding, but in the best possible way. He brings an incredible work ethic to everything he does.

Your character in Jawbreaker, Courtney, is one of the popular girls, mainly because everyone’s terrified of her. There’s a great scene in that one where she flips things around on her boyfriend, and makes him go down on a popsicle for her amusement. Was that fun to film?
It totally was, yeah! I didn’t entirely understand what I was doing. I mean, I understood it was subversive. It was fun, though, because the director was very openly gay, and it was fun to be re-enacting his fantasy for him.

That was quite a subversive scene for a high school movie…
I like to inject a bit of subversiveness into everything I do. My character in Conan The Barbarian is obsessed with her father, so I had her develop an Electra complex and try to seduce him the whole time. That’s a little creepy, but you don’t often see that in movies, and I thought it would be hilarious. That’s my sense of humour.

In Planet Terror, you played Cherry Darling, a stripper who ends up with a machine gun leg. Did you have to learn how to move in a whole new way?
Oh, completely, because I wasn’t walking on a flat foot, I was walking on a gun barrel, and at one point, a peg leg. I had a five-pound cast, with LED lights, strapped to me, and my toe was taped up so it was just my heel resting on the ground. I had to always keep in mind that my character was walking on a tiny gun barrel or a table leg. On the other side, I was wearing a four-inch high-heeled boot. It was a challenge; I had to run faster and jump higher than everyone else, and do so while I was wearing this ridiculous, heavy cast and I had no toes.

So is that one of the more bizarre things you’ve had to do as an actress?
I’ve done quite a few bizarre things, but I don’t know how you top having a machine gun for a leg. That can come in handy in so many different ways…

You once said that you fell into acting accidentally. Can you tell us a bit more about that?
I was living in LA off and on, and I lost… I had a boyfriend who died, so I lost the apartment we were living in. I was looking at the possibility of moving back to Seattle, Washington, to live with my father. I did not want to do that, because I don’t like rain, and who wants to live with their father when they’re 18? I was approached to do The Doom Generation, and I kept saying no, but then I realised that if I was to do that it would mean enough money for me to get an apartment, and I wouldn’t have to live with my dad. That’s the only reason I became an actor; I didn’t want to become famous or make my mark!

So did there ever come a point when acting felt like the right choice?
No, in fact, it was pretty much the opposite. I recently had an epiphany that I hated acting and didn’t want to do it anymore.

Oh, wow.
The power went out in my house about a month ago, and I was just sitting around with no distractions, with no battery left in my phone, and I just thought, wait a second, I never really made a choice to start acting, I just fell into it, and I never once stopped to think if I wanted to do it or if I even liked the acting business. I thought, do I have to keep doing this just because so many other people wish they could be doing it? Do you know what I mean?

Yeah, I do.
Thinking about it that way has freed me up a lot. I filmed Once Upon A Time after that[McGowan had a guest spot in a recent episode of the fairy tale drama - ed], and I was a little worried that I was going to have a hard time and I wouldn’t care, but it was the opposite; it all came back, so that was good. I’m more interested in directing now, to be honest. I just finished my first piece for RSA Black Dog, which is Ridley Scott’s commercial music video company. I directed a 20-minute short with amazing actors. It was a really amazing project to do, and I felt really comfortable doing it, more so than I ever have acting.

Do you have a dream project as a director, a passion project?
My taste is a bit… I don’t want to say ‘twisted’, because that’s such a cliché, but I like things that are tongue-in-cheek, things that don’t go where you expect them to. I’ve found a feature film project that I’d really like to start in the next six to nine months. I’m a huge black-and-white film buff, so I’d love to make something in black-and-white one day, although I don’t want to be in it. There are a lot of actors who direct so they can put themselves in a dream role, and I understand that; they want to create something perfect for themselves. I’m at a point, though, where I don’t really care about acting anymore, so I don’t think I’d want to do that. I’m being really honest right now and I probably shouldn’t be.

So, how did you ladies & gents enjoy Rose’s Once Upon a Time episode?

Personally, I had never watched the show before but I really enjoyed it, especially Rose’s performance as younger Cora. She more than held her own opposite the great Robert Carlyle, which really says a lot! It was such a treat for us fans. I really hope we’ll see more of young Cora in future episodes!

I have uploaded 900+ high definition screencaptures from The Miller’s Daughter in our gallery. I hope you like them! In addition, I added a bunch of high quality stills and behind the scenes images from the episode during the weekend but didn’t have a chance to update about them until now. Many thanks to Storybrooke for these beautiful images!

Rose McGowan is coming to Once Upon a Time this Sunday, March 10, as the young Cora in Fairytale Land, the titular “Miller’s Daughter.” She tells Zap2it that it was a joy to work on the OUAT set and that she loved being part of an origin story.

First off, we tell McGowan that we’ve seen the episode and we must commend her on how much she looks and sounds like Barbara Hershey, who plays the older Cora. So, did Rose study Barbara’s clips from the show?

“No. I watched like three or four clips and then I forgot all about it,” says McGowan. “I realized that this is an origin story. I already look very similar to her, and in real life, I have a voice that’s pretty deep, so it matches pretty well. So that took care of that.”

“The rest of the story is very different in how she’s ended up, so I have actually an open palette to play with. I approached it that way,” she continues. “I wasn’t try to imitate her in any way because the physical aspect was already taken care of.”

“That’s the cool thing about being an origin story and not a later story, you get to create what the person was before.”

And what Cora was before is not that dissimilar to what we’ve seen of older Cora. She may not have been evil, but she was definitely always ambitious.

“I think she started out as somebody with a lot of burning intensity to be more than she is,” McGowan observes. “She hated being looked down upon by the swells, so to speak. All the swanky people looking down on her while she’s laying in the dirt did not work well for her. She knew she was meant for greater things.”

At any cost, we wonder?

“She struggles with that, you see her struggle with it. What is worth what? What’s better than love? Power.” says McGowan. “Her primary drive is trying to prove her worth to people, people who look down on her, and then ultimately making those people pay.”

In making those people pay, look for Cora to have her first meeting with (who else?) Rumpelstiltskin. They make quite the pair.

So, is this flashback the last we’ve seen of young Cora?

“I hope not,” says Rose. “I had such a tremendously wonderful time, I’m completely open to coming back.”

“The people — Jennifer, Josh, Lana — they’re literally all the nicest people you’ll ever meet,” she continues. “It’s scary to go into someone else’s home, because when you work together on a show you become a big family unit. So when you walk in as a guest star, people can, and often do, behave very badly toward guest stars. But everybody was beyond great.”

Once Upon a Time had a game-changing episode Sunday night (March 10), in more ways than one. Don’t keep reading if you haven’t watched the episode yet.

Not only is Cora dead, but Snow White killed her. What is going to become of our beloved Snow, who always has been so good?

Ginnifer Goodwin has already teased that what Snow did is “going to shake her self-identity, her self-definition … she doesn’t know who she is. I think that actually opens a lot up for her. She can get in touch with a more evolved way of protecting herself and her family.”

We cannot wait to see the fall-out from Snow — Regina is going to be on the warpath.

Speaking of Regina, “The Miller’s Daughter” gave us all a glimpse into young Cora’s life before the birth of her daughter, beautifully demonstrated by guest star Rose McGowan.

We had to ask McGowan — was Cora truly in love with Rumpelstiltskin?

“I think so. Yeah, I do,” says Rose. And did he love Cora back? “Yes. Could be ego speaking, but I think so.”

McGowan adds that her one request in doing the show was to act opposite Robert Carlyle.

“When the creators approached me, I requested that my scenes be with Robert Carlyle … the scene that we have where we’re kind of ending things, it was a marvelous scene. Very emotional,” says McGowan. “It was everything that I wanted to do with him as an actor, which was great.”

In the episode, it is implied that Cora and Rumpel will never have any children together and that Regina is Prince Henry’s daughter. But the way the family tree has been shaping up on this show, we wonder if Regina is actually Rumpel’s daughter.

“It’s possible. Anything is possible in that world,” says McGowan. “I think it does leave it open-ended, I think you’re very canny.”

What do you think, OUAT fans? Is Rumpelstiltskin both Henry’s real grandfather on one side and adopted grandfather on the other?

This week’s Once Upon a Time reveals the backstory of the simple miller’s daughter who grew up to be the terrifying Cora (Barbara Hershey), the woman responsible for making The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) the villain she is today. Rose McGowan is the actress tasked with showing us Cora’s humble beginnings, portraying the character when she first made the outrageous claim that she could spin straw into gold.

HuffPost TV caught up with McGowan to find out how it felt to step into Barbara Hershey’s shoes, the highlights of working with Robert Carlyle (Rumplestiltskin) and whether Cora is actually capable of love.

What are you allowed to reveal about this week’s episode?
I can reveal that it was certainly an honor getting to play Barbara Hershey, younger, because she’s a tremendous actress. If you’re going to play a part she was playing, that’s a good one. I love people that are operatically evil — the interesting part is that young Cora is not. She does not start that way; most people, unless they are true sociopaths, do not start off at evil, so to speak. She starts out dirt poor. So she really claws her way to the top and Rumple helps, a lot. He saved her life.

How was the experience of filming with the excellent Robert Carlyle?
Beyond. When Eddy [Kitsis] and Adam [Horowitz], the creators, called me and they asked me if I would consider doing a part on the show, I said, “Absolutely,” the caveat being that I really want my scenes to be with Robert Carlyle because he’s such a tremendous actor. So then, I got my wish and then I was like “Oh no, just kidding — it’s Robert Carlyle and he’s a tremendous actor, I’ve got to step up my game!”

So it was thrilling and terrifying and fun and scary and everything all at once, but we had a fantastic time together. When you work with an actor who is that good, it’s like being professional tennis player. You’re playing with a pro at that point and you’re a pro yourself. So, it’s really nice, high-level tennis that you don’t often get to play with people

Were you a fan of the show beforehand?
I was a fan of the show. I didn’t really watch it regularly, just because I travel all the time and I’m a very irregular TV watcher, period, but I certainly knew the story and the storyline. I thought this was an amazing way to introduce me into that world. What better way than playing somebody who is one of the coolest people on the show, one of the coolest characters? I love evil. I think there is something operatic and wonderful about it. I figured out that it’s not really much different than having comic timing. It’s very similar. You have to hit almost the exact same beat as if you were doing a comedy, but you’re doing something else. It has very specific beats. This was so well written. They did a really tremendous job. There is a scene that I have with Robert Carlyle, later in the show, that’s probably one of my favorite pieces I’ve done in a long time. It’s a very emotional scene and it was really beautifully written and beautifully acted by Robert, hopefully I did it justice.

Watching the episode, you can really buy into the idea that you and Barbara are the same character — you have the same bearing and presence on the screen. Did you try to study her performance to capture the essence of the character?
I did at first, but then I realized, it was her origin story so I didn’t have to. I was like, “Wait; this is how she becomes that way. I am not the final incarnation of her.” So, there is nothing I really have to imitate. So, that’s how I approached it and also, I watched her. I didn’t try to imitate her voice. We both have kind of deep voices. We already have a lot of physical similarities so I just kind of depended more on that, taking care of that part of it, which freed me up to do whatever I wanted to do.

Have the producers approached you about the possibility of doing more flashbacks?
Well, I just don’t know what to say about that … [Laughs.] It would be great fun.

The episode features a lot of green screen work — how was that experience for you?
I have a lot of background in green screen — I’ve done some of my best work to a green tennis ball on a stick, crying hysterically to a green tennis ball. [Laughs.] I’m very well versed in that world. They’re like, “Do you need the other actor?” I’m like, “No, no. Get the tennis ball. They can go home. It’s okay.”

The dance sequence was amazing because it was huge. I don’t think I’ve done a green screen where they’ve made such a huge set out of green screen. I don’t think I’ve worked with green screen on that level. They’re making a huge castle that you’re walking in. That was interesting to me. I’m really curious to see how that comes out. They do a tremendous job on the show in general, but how great to be in a period scene where you’re doing a court ballroom dance? It’s amazing.

Since all of your scenes are in flashback and you were predominantly working with Robert, were there other characters or actors you wish you could’ve worked with?
I would love to work with Ginnifer Goodwin. Ginny lives in my old house, which is very funny. A house that I restored she’s lived in for a while now. We got to see each other in the makeup trailer and hang out stuff like that, but it would be great fun to do something with her and Robert … all of them. It’s such a terrific cast.

Finally, do you think Cora is capable of love, or does she love power more?
I think at one point she was very capable of love and I think at one point in the future, she’ll be capable of it again.

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

Who was Cora before she became Regina’s evil mother?

On Sunday’s Once Upon a Time, “The Miller’s Daughter,” viewers will be introduced to young Cora (Charmed star Rose McGowan), banished to a tower and ordered to follow through on a promise that she can spin straw into gold, with the aid of Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle).

For McGowan, it was crucial that she not copy Barbara Hershey’s portrayal. “You’re playing someone that’s alive, that the audience knows really well; they know her mannerisms, they know her voice,” she explains to The Hollywood Reporter.

McGowan talked to THR about jumping into an established show like Once Upon a Time, how young Cora is introduced and the one scene to look out for.

The Hollywood Reporter: Were there nerves jumping into an established world like Once Upon a Time?
Rose McGowan: Absolutely. There were quite a few nervous-making factors. You’re playing someone that’s alive, that the audience knows really well; they know her mannerisms, they know her voice. What I tried to do was watch a lot of Barbara Hershey’s stuff and then I kind of just forgot about it. I didn’t want to go and try to imitate somebody. I immersed myself in it and then completely disregarded it. Hopefully it tied together and fans won’t be too mad at me. [Laughs]

THR: You mentioned that you watched Barbara’s portrayal of Cora before you jumped in. Were there aspects to the character that you knew you had to make sure to highlight or include?
McGowan: No, I was lucky because it was an origin story, so it’s how she got to how she is now. So I didn’t have to play how she is now. I got to disregard her character. I’m actually informing her character. In a weird way, it was really freeing. Before someone becomes, say, “evil,” there are usually a lot of reasons that go into it. Most people who are on the evil side, there are things in their lives that happen to make them that way. Nobody’s 100 percent one way usually.

THR: What did you find interesting about the way Barbara has played Cora?
McGowan: The thing with how Barbara plays the character — she’s such a tremendous actress — is that she really relishes her villainy, if you will. That’s sometimes the most fun about playing a villain. When you’re playing a villain, it’s almost an operatic thing. You’re not over the top all the time, but there are elements that are over the top, grandiosity to the character. I was inspired by Barbara’s way of playing that for sure.

THR: How is young Cora introduced in “The Miller’s Daughter”?
McGowan: She starts very, very poor. She does not start in fabulous gowns, let’s put it that way. Fabulous gowns not until later for her. She doesn’t come from a charmed life, so to speak. She’s not a Prince Charming. She’s someone who’s come from the dirt, literally. For her to claw her way up is inspirational.

THR: How does she move her way up the ladder?
McGowan: Rumple plays a big part in that. He shows her how to get ahead. You have to watch the episode to see. It’s not Hollywood; it’s Once Upon a Time, so it’s a little more layered.

THR: Is there a scene we should look out for?
McGowan: There is a scene where it turns out I can’t give Rumple what he wants. It was an incredibly emotional scene for both of us, and it was really beautiful. That scene stood out for me, probably my favorite.

THR: The costumes are extremely ornate.
McGowan: Not subtle, which is great. [Costume designer] Eduardo Castro, who I worked with on an Elvis miniseries, is tremendously talented. His team, the stuff that they do, it’s insane how quickly they [create everything]. The [costumes] harken back to old Hollywood days when people would go all out. They didn’t skimp on the inside or the outside, and that’s how the Once Upon a Time costume-design crew approaches this, which is refreshing. You walk differently, you do become a queen while you’re in such a stately costume.

THR: Did you have a favorite outfit?
McGowan: They did a wedding gown that was spectacular.

Very exciting news on this beautiful morning! According to E! Online’s Watch with Kristin, Rose McGowan might be back on Once Upon a Time for the show’s next season!

Read on for details – but beware for some potential spoilers.

Nicole F.: Can you tell me anything else about Rose McGowan’s character on Once? I’ve been obsessed with her since Charmed!
That’s a great question, which is why we posed it to McGowan herself. We already know she’s playing a younger version of Cora in an origin episode airing next month, but did you also know she’s part of a love story? “I fall madly in love, and then it ends tragically,” she tells us. “Most of my stuff is with Rumple. And it was an amazing experience and I’ll see them again next season.” Next season? Does this mean we’ll see her character again? “It’s in the works,” McGowan tells us coyly.

“All told, it took about 27 hours,” McGowan told InStyle.com at the Humane Society of the United States’ To The Rescue! New York benefit. “The first day alone was 14 hours,” The dye job was done by celebrity colorist Tracey Cunningham—much loved by stars like Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Drew Barrymore—and was inspired by Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic locks in Scarface.

“I’ve just been in a little bit of a rebellious mood, what can I say?” McGowan said of her decision. ”It was a big transition.” Indeed!
