• “Everyone’s got a story; I’ve just got a lot of chapters.” – Genlux – Holiday 2011

• “I took two years off because of a major illness in the family. So many people get caught up in a panic about taking time off, worried they’ll be forgotten about. The reality is, this is my one life. I stick to my convictions, for better or worse.” – Modern Dog – Summer 2011

• “From a really young age, I was into female empowerment and supporting the underdog. Right now, I’m into female vengeance.” – Fox News, 2008

The past five years have brought many triumphs and tribulations to Rose McGowan’s career. Although there were some hiccups in recent years, the projects that did see the light of day have been undeniable with one common factor; they all showcased new range in Rose’s talents and arguably provided her finest and most diverse performances to date.

Grindhouse (2007)

“In the performance of her life, McGowan throws herself into the juicy, sexy, funny, comic book hero role of Cherry Darling.” – Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper

“The whole experience was completely schizophrenic, but in the best way.” – Rose McGowan

Grindhouse is, hands down, our favorite project of Rose McGowan. Two films. Two characters. One awesome throwback concept idea. What’s not to love? If we had to define Rose’s most star-making performance, it would have to be the quick-witted Cherry Darling in Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror. And while her role in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof was smaller, it was more than memorable, and she did a magnificent job at portraying two such completely different characters in basically one movie.

This project also has an ever bigger meaning to us. We launched our site in February of 2007, a few months prior to the release of Grindhouse. While we had been fans of Rose for many, many years, the hype and uniqueness that came with the project led to us finally pursuing and realising this website. So, it’s pretty safe to say that if it were not for Grindhouse, Rose-McGowan.com would possibly not even exist!

Nip/Tuck (2009)

“I had wanted to do a guest stint some years ago, but it never worked out schedule wise. It, as anyone who watches the show knows, is totally bananas. Just off the wall. I’m doing something I hope to never do hope to never do again – replace an actress who’s already established a role. It didn’t occur to me that it’d be completely unnerving and bizarre until I filmed my first scene. It was still a great experience,” explained Rose during her second Q&A with Rose-McGowan.com

Rose McGowan portrayed Dr. Teddy Rowe for five episodes on the sixth season of Nip/Tuck, which kicked off October 14, 2009. Another actress may have made Teddy a caricatyre but Rose portrayed her as anything but. Smart, cunning, gorgeous and so deliciously evil – you just had to love Rose’s performance as Teddy!

Conan the Barbarian (2011)

“Meanwhile, Rose McGowan, as Lang’s demented witch of a daughter, Marique, takes the scenery chewing route, licking blood from her Freddy Krueger-esque finger blades, seemingly having the time of her life portraying a monstrous lunatic, which all adds to the films’ unashamed craziness. – The Hollywood Reporter

No question about it, most unique of ALL of Rose McGowan’s character looks has to be Marique, a role that was originally conceptualized for a male actor. It required Rose to sit through six hours of make-up each morning. And while the film itself received mixed reviews, no one could deny that Rose stole the show. With her villainous attitude, razor-nails, wedge heels and leather get-up… Marique is anything but forgettable!

The Pastor’s Wife (2011)

Rose McGowan won rave reviews from both the critics and audiences alike for her performance as Mary Winkler in the Lifetime movie The Pastor’s Wife. While the film itself is fast-paced, entertaining and keeps you at your toes as it uncovers the tragedy of the Winkler family, the real star of the film is McGowan. Her performance is both subtle and powerful. She manages to pull the viewer in and make you care for her character and her highly controversial story, based on real life events.

The Essentials (2007-2009)

“I’m going to be co-hosting The Essentials with Robert Osborne on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). I’m beyond excited. To be discussing classic films with a brilliant film historian is a dream come true.” – Rose McGowan

Not only did Rose deliver superior acting performances in the past give years but she also contributed to Turner Classic Movies’ The Essentials. In November 2007 Rose McGowan debuted during the Guest Programmer month and eventually went on to co-host the program with Robert Osbourne. Between March 2008 and January 2009 she brought the classic silver screen films to the small screen on a weekly basis.

Last but certainly not least! We’d like to dedicate an honorable mention for Boop, Rose’s hilarious guest bit on FunnyOrDie.com’s short faux trailer for the untold story of how Betty Boop came to exist. Such a treat!

Rose-McGowan.com opened its doors on February 12, 2007, which means that today, on February 12, 2012, we are celebrating the site’s fifth birthday!

To celebrate the occasion we are doing five different look backs at various aspects of Rose McGowan and the site. We are starting with this post, which features five of the highlights of Rose-McGowan.com between the years 2007 and 2012.

• In November 2007 and July 2009 we conducted exclusive Q&A sessions with Rose McGowan herself. Needless to say, this was a great honor and these interviews remain some of the greatest highlights of the site.

• Every year we’ve aimed to create something special in honor of Rose’s birthday on September 5. One of the highlights includes our 2009 birthday project. Over 30 fans from 16 different countries contributed to the 32+ paged color printed scrapbook, which consists of letters, birthday wishes, fan art, poems and local postcards, all dedicated to Rose. We also gifted her with some gorgeous Boston Terrier memorabilia, including a stunning figurine. Rose was deeply touched by the gift and sent us a very sweet thank you note. View the birthday project page for further details.

• In August 2010 we auctioned an authentic Rose McGowan autograph to benefit Boston Terrier Rescue Net, one of Rose’s favorite charities, in honor of the actress’ 37th birthday. View the news post for further details.

• Rose-McGowan.com was mentioned the August 2011 issue of Total Film. The magazine featured a truly wonderful article on Rose and used our site as an example of Rose’s Old Hollywood demeanor. It was a huge honor to us that it was recognized by a magazine, especially one as awesome as Total Film! View the news post for further info.

• In celebration of her 38th birthday we created a video featuring clips of some of our favorite Rose scenes and performances throughout her career set to some great pieces of music. We were able to present a DVD copy to Rose in person in October 2011, which she absolutely loved!

• Lastly, we’d like to take a moment to thank all of our loyal visitors, many of whom have been with us since the very beginning. Thank you for sticking by us and for all of your lovely comments, contributions and friendships. We really and truly appreciate all the love! To us YOU are the biggest highlight of the site. We are so privileged to have met so many wonderful people throughout the years and formed such great friendships.

This past weekend, on February 4, Rose McGowan visited The Gentle Barn in Santa Clarita, California. Founded by Ellie Laks in 1999, The Gentle Barn is currently home to 130 animals who are rescued from severe abuse, neglect or slaughter.

Once the animals are rehabilitated they stay at the barn for the rest of their lives and serve as ambassadors helping to heal abused children. The Gentle Barn is host to kids in foster care, on probation, in gangs, on drugs and from the inner city, as well as school groups and special needs kids and adults. Through the interactions with the animals and their stories, kids learn kindness, compassion, confidence and reverence for all life.

What a truly wonderful cause! Be sure to visit the Gentle Barn website for plenty of more information and how to get involved if you are a local.

The gallery has been updated with images of Rose with Buddha, The Gentle Barn’s therapy cow, another cow named Buttercup and an adorable pot-bellied pig, among many others. She was also snapped with Betty DeGeneres, the mother of Ellen. Additionally, Rose was graciously surprised when Ellie Laks chose to name a newly rescued goat “Rose” as a thank you for her support.

Today I whipped out my pile of McGowan magazines still waiting to be scanned and made high quality scans from a couple of older goodies; Arena – March 2005, Interview – March 1997 and another issue all the way back from October 1995! The Interview photoshoots in particular are some of my all time favourite images of Rose.

Note that the 1997 Interview magazine article gets cut a little due to the large size of the magazine pages. But fear not, you can always read the full story in all of its glory right here in our library!

Enjoy the scans!

Be sure to read Rose McGowan’s incredibly touching message at the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis website regarding her personal struggle with to Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF).

Dear Friends of the CPF:

Like many of you, my life was unalterably changed the day my father was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF). He was my touchstone in life and once I realized that he was suffering from a disease that was 100% fatal, I found myself feeling utterly helpless and broken-hearted. It has taken me a great deal of time to begin to heal and I still shed tears at the most unexpected moments. He was taken at what seems to me a fairly young age of 61 – my heart was not ready to let him go.

I am now in the fight to stop this horrible disease because you can’t change anything by bemoaning your fate or sitting on the sidelines. After dealing with this tough loss, I have determined that my course needs to be one of helping to stop the disease – my loss can be turned into a win for all those diagnosed with PF in the future.

None of us can effect change on our own, but as a united group we can use our numbers to build national awareness of this terrible disease, demand attention to it and help fund the day-to-day work needed to help all those affected. We need a very large team of people coming together to generate a more active national campaign against PF.

My decision to help the CPF in their work to stop PF is my way of keeping my dad’s legacy alive and making a contribution to the world in his name. There are many causes that are better known, but watching the inexorable destruction that PF wreaks on the patient and their family and friends has convinced me of the urgency of this work. We are losing as many patients as breast cancer, but the investment in research for PF is minimal – it’s time for a change.

I welcome your support, both as an advocate and donor, and hope you will help the CPF and me win important victories over Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Thank you,

Rose McGowan

Motion Picture and television actress Rose McGowan, perhaps best known for her roles on TV’s long-running, Charmed, and the 2011 motion picture, Conan the Barbarian, among others, is taking a lead role in a profound real life drama. In 2009, she lost her father, artist Daniel McGowan, to Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF), an incurable lung disease that has no cure and no FDA-approved treatments, and which kills more than 40,000 Americans each year…as many as breast cancer. She’s now taking a lead role to build awareness to fight the disease and working with the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis (CPF).

On Friday, December 16th, McGowan posted a message about her work with the CPF and the need for increased awareness for PF on her Facebook page. The post will be live at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time at http://www.facebook.com/RoseMcGowan.

As CPF’s Ambassador and Chair of The Daughters of PF campaign, a new program of the CPF, a 501C3 non-profit foundation, McGowan plans to help generate wide public awareness about PF, which has thus far been little known to the broad U.S. public. In so doing, she intends to use her celebrity to shine a spotlight on PF, much as other prominent individuals have done for diseases such as AIDS, breast cancer, Parkinson’s, and others.

For those stricken with PF, the lungs become scarred to the point that they can no longer make the necessary blood-oxygen exchange necessary to breathe and eventually causes patients to suffocate. Currently there is no PF treatment approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and there is no cure. McGowan, having witnessed personally the cruelty of the disease, has committed to taking a prominent role in the national effort to fight PF.
“Pulmonary Fibrosis is a horrible, horrible way to go. It makes me quite angry that not a lot of people know about it. I want to help change that,” said Rose McGowan.

“We are honored that Rose is taking on this cause and helping give patients and families a voice in fighting this horrible disease,” said Mishka Michon, CEO of the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis. “Because she has been directly affected by PF through her father’s illness and death, she has a unique perspective and personally understands the plight of patients and their families. Her efforts will contribute to forever changing the landscape for this little known killer disease, and her celebrity, talent, and energy will serve to not only build needed awareness of the disease, but it will also help lead to developing successful treatments and eventually a cure.”

As the Chair of the Daughters of PF and an Ambassador for the CPF, McGowan will help raise public awareness of the disease by speaking out and doing media interviews, attending or hosting public events, and interacting with PF sufferers and their families, including via social media. The Daughters of PF program inspires daughters and other family members to turn their grief and pain into action by holding awareness and fundraising efforts in their local areas. To learn more about Daughters of PF, visit www.coalitionforpf.org or their Facebook page.

McGowan starred as Paige Matthews in Charmed and starred in the movie Conan the Barbarian. She has the lead role as Mary Winkler in the upcoming made-for-TV movie, The Pastor’s Wife. She also stars in a new film, Rosewood Lane.

About Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF)
Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) is a lung disorder characterized by a progressive scarring – known as fibrosis — and deterioration of the lungs, which slowly robs its victims of their ability to breathe. Approximately 128,000 Americans suffer from PF, and there is currently no known cause or cure. An estimated 48,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. PF is difficult to diagnose and an estimated two-thirds of patients die within five years of diagnosis. Sometimes PF can be linked to a particular cause, such as certain environmental exposures, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, residual infection, or autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma or rheumatoid arthritis. However, in many instances, no known cause can be established. When this is the case, it is called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

About Daughters of PF
In 2011, the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis launched a new effort inspired by the tens of thousands of daughters (and others) who have seen a parent suffer from PF. The women involved in Daughters of PF are professional women in various fields and specialties including legal, medical, and educational. The women are creating projects across the country and in their local areas to increase awareness and understanding of PF and also holding fundraisers to raise needed money for research and patient support services. Their efforts are reflective of their interests and talents and will allow them to make a difference right where they are. For more information, contact the CPF at daughters@coalitionforpf.org or call 1-888-222-8541, ext. 702.

About the CPF
The CPF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, founded in 2001 to accelerate research efforts leading to a cure for pulmonary fibrosis (PF), while educating, supporting, and advocating for the community of patients, families, and medical professionals fighting this disease. The CPF funds promising research into new approaches to treat and cure PF; provides patients and families with comprehensive education materials, resources, and hope; serves as a voice for national advocacy of PF issues; and works to improve awareness of PF in the medical community as well as the general public. The CPF’s nonprofit partners include many of the most respected medical centers and healthcare organizations in the U.S. With more than 23,000 members nationwide, the CPF is the largest nonprofit organization in the U.S. dedicated to advocating for those with PF. For more information please visit www.coalitionforpf.org or call (888) 222-8541.

I have updated the gallery with photos from a handful of events that Rose McGowan attended this past November, which we did not have the chance of adding earlier. Apologies for the delay! Namely, photos have been uploaded from GQ‘s 2011 “Men of the Year” Party, the Time Warner Cable Signature Home Celebrity Event, the 2011 Hollywood Style Awards and the 2011 MOCA Gala.

My favorite look was the vibrant turquoise Hervé L. Leroux gown that Rose rocked at the 2011 Museum of Contemporary Art Gala. She accessorized with emerald-green Vhernier earrings, a matching ring and an onyx gold bracelet also by Vhernier. Black Gucci Leight python and suede T-strap platform sandals, bouncing curls, smoky eyes and a shimmering nude lip colour completed Rose’s gorgeous look. One of my favorites of the year, without a doubt!

Actress and gay rights activist Rose McGowan is still glowing over the announcement that the U.S. military policy “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – put into place by the Clinton administration in 1993 – was repealed in July, allowing openly homosexual men and women to serve in the armed forces.

“It’s amazing, and I think primarily how it’s been reacted [to] within the troops has been more inspirational than anything,” she told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column at amfAR’s Inspiration Gala Los Angeles to benefit the Foundation’s AIDS research programs. “My brother flies F16′s in the Air Force, and for him, it’s been a non-issue this entire time, and for most military people I know it’s the same. It’s us out here in the public that has a problem with it, which I think is a pity. Just like anything, it’s new and uncomfortable for them at first, and then it’s normal.”

McGowan recently revealed to this column that she was preparing to embark on a second USO tour to Afghanistan. “(The troops) get really sad and forget because they feel like people have forgotten them,” she said.. “So I’m just a representative, a vessel, showing that people are thinking of them.”

But professionally speaking, the former Charmed star said it’s a dream come true, scoring a role in the Lifetime movie The Pastor’s Wife, which centers on the true life story surrounding the 2006 death of Matthew Winkler (Michael Shanks), a beloved minister and community leader who was mysteriously shot and killed in his Selmer, Tennessee, home.

During their investigation, the authorities soon focus in on Matthew’s wife, Mary (McGowan), as the crime’s prime suspect.

“I’m a true crime junkie. I even remember when she was on the cover of People magazine. I was kind of strangely obsessed with it, and I said, ‘No, no, no, I don’t want to do another television thing,’ but honestly, the script was so good and so different,” she added. “I play this little invisible church lady from a population of 1200 in Tennessee. I couldn’t pass it up. It’s so opposite (from roles I’ve done before).”

“It was really weird being invisible,” the voluptuous camera-magnet said. “She’s like the invisible woman, the kind of woman you just walk by at Disneyland, the mom you never notice, she drives a minivan, you just don’t see anything, and that was unusual.”

I’m kind of at this strange crossroads in my life. I’m trying to figure out where I want to be. And I love Los Angeles in the sense that I love my friends there and I love my life there, but the business 24-7 just grinds on you. There’s no escape for you. I notice that my self-esteem and my general sense of well-being is much higher when I’m not there, and it’s sort of sad to live your life somewhere that makes you sad.

From the pre-opening credit moment when authorities roll out a shrouded body as concerned neighbors look on, it’s clear The Pastor’s Wife is a Lifetime movie like momma used to make ‘em: Fact-based, trashy and featuring an imperiled young woman. Still, this is an eminently watchable take on the old formula, anchored by Rose McGowan, whose pained expressions each time someone calls her handsome husband a treasure pretty much speak volumes. Mostly, it’s a reminder of what amounts to TV movie law: Slap your wife around in the Deep South, and someone’s gonna wind up on Nancy Grace.

Promoted from a berth on Lifetime‘s movie channel to the flagship network, the pic stars McGowan as Mary Winkler, the mother of three who shook up her Tennessee town in 2006 by shooting husband Matthew (Michael Shanks), the popular local pastor, in their bedroom.

Only through flashback do we learn about the abuse he allegedly heaped upon her, making the movie as constructed less about whodunnit than why. But with no witnesses and little evidence to validate her story, can she actually make a self-defense plea fly?

If the subject matter is as old as The Burning Bed, writer Robert L. Freedman and director Norma Bailey have managed to present Winkler’s tale of woe with a degree of style, including direct-to-camera testimony from other townsfolk that provides a sense of documentary-style authenticity. And while McGowan has a diverse resume, she’s perfectly convincing as the Southern wife who can solemnly drawl of her late husband, “I could never do anything right in his eyes.”

Among the drawbacks is the lack of memorable supporting performances, even within the inevitable courtroom scenes, which feature Martin Cummins as Mary’s lawyer. (Video of the aforementioned Grace is included, by the way, with video of the HLN host pithily referring to Winkler’s case the “Tennessee minister murder mystery.”)

While broadcast networks once went overboard dramatizing such cases, the pendulum has swung far enough in the other direction that devoting a TV movie to this true-crime yarn — as opposed to an episode of 48 Hours, Dateline or a reality show with cheesy reenactments — actually feels like a small luxury, or at least a greasy junk-food meal as opposed to the usual snack.

Besides, the ratings ought to be boffo. What better way could there be for a predominantly female audience to vicariously escape on Saturday night than watching a woman kill her husband?

With its rich stock of midnight drearies — to say nothing of its black cats and purloined miscellany — New Orleans at any time of year feels like a custom-made setting for an Edgar Allan Poe story.

At Halloween time, however, it feels like a match made in — well, made somewhere. Which explains just about everything you need to know about the tone of the indie production of Poe’s Tell-Tale Heart that crept quietly into town almost two weeks ago and which will continue shooting through Nov. 10.

For star Rose McGowan (Charmed, Grindhouse) that kind of instant atmosphere is an actor’s dream. “Basically, if I could liken this movie to anything,” McGowan said, “it would be a dark moonlit night, (seen) through the Spanish moss.”

In other words, although Poe’s original Gothic tale doesn’t specify a location, the specter of New Orleans can’t help but float in and out of writer-director John La Tier’s feature-length adaptation. In fact, La Tier, who moved to an apartment near the Algiers ferry during the script’s early development, couldn’t resist but to incorporate the city’s textures into his film.

So the river is there, the ferry, the sound of the streetcar rumbling down Canal Street. (The script also notably features a fictional asylum, right smack in the middle of Algiers.)

“One main influence of the story is something only the locals know: some evenings, a flock of nearly 50,000 birds dance across the sky for 10 minutes between Decatur and North Peters, just at sunset,” La Tier said. “This occurrence and many others from the French Quarter have all made their way into the script. Anyone familiar with New Orleans will see the city’s influence throughout the movie — in addition to all of the Poe references, from ‘The Black Cat’ to ‘Annabel Lee.’”

Obviously, this is not a strict interpretation of Poe’s classic story. (Read the full original text of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart here.) Aside from the New Orleans setting, evidence of La Tier’s artistic licence can be found in McGowan’s presence — despite there being no female characters in Poe’s version — as well as the fact that Poe’s original story is only three pages long.

It’s still a portrait of one man’s descent into madness, though. And it’s still built around his murder of an old man with a wonky eye and a supernaturally stubborn ticker. (The actor playing that old man: legendary director Peter Bogdanovich, he of The Last Picture Show and Paper Moon.) And, of course, it still aims to set spines to shivering.

But this feature-length version — which is targeting a 2012 release — fleshes out that three-page gem to more fully immerse movie-goers into the main character’s madness. In that regard, Patrick John Flueger (Brothers), who won the lead role in The Tell-Tale Heart after appearing as the chief antagonist in this month’s Footloose remake, said movie-goers can expect to really get inside his character’s head.

“The Poe short is all very suggestive,” Flueger said. “You really have very little context. It’s just this guy telling this story. (Here), you get a lot more context. There’ll be payoff at the end for the audience, I guess is what I’m saying, because I think they’ll feel connected with him as a character and not so much as just a bat-sh– crazy guy.”

Although, make no mistake, he is exactly that. La Tier works to make that clear by blending reality with delusion — Flueger says it reminds him of Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island in that sense — and with what everyone involved paints as a trippy, intriguingly off-center approach.

“Not only is it something different than what’s being done now in Hollywood, but it was an opportunity to be a part of something really, really nice, and it looked like they were trying to put together something really special,” co-star Damon Whitaker said. “And that’s always a blessing as an actor to be along with something like that.”

Flueger agreed: “Wait until you see some of the visuals,” he said. “That’s been the funnest thing. I’ll come with my ideas of how to play the role, and I then I’ll see what happens in this scene, how (things are) blowing everywhere, snow’s falling. (La Tier) has really got a vision for it.”

For McGowan, in particular, the chance to be a part of the film, and to shoot it in New Orleans no less, was one she couldn’t pass up. This is, after all, a woman who first read The Tell-Tale Heart at the tender age of 4 years old.

“I’ve been kind of very obsessed with Poe ever since,” she said. “And so when this came along, I knew there was no female character. I was not understanding how that was going to work. And it’s done quite beautifully, and how he’s modernized it and adapted it. It’s really, honestly, one of the best scripts I’ve read in years.

So what can audiences expect? Horror? Suspense? Romance?

“It’s definitely not a horror film,” she said. “I mean there are horrific aspects, but it’s so beautiful at the same time. It’s sort of magically insane.”
