Rose McGowan plays evil sorceress Marique in the new Conan the Barbarian film, but her exaggerated forehead – aka her “10-head,” as she called her character’s look, was simply down to movie magic.
“The studio asked if I would shave my eyebrows and my hairline back to here, and I said, ‘Sure, if you give me $5 million,” Rose laughed as she visited Kit Hoover on Access Hollywood Live on Wednesday.
Instead, the look of Marique was crafted in a makeup room.
“I sat from around 2 in the morning until about 7 in the morning,” she explained.
In Conan, which opens this Friday, Rose stars alongside Jason Momoa in the title role, and the former Game of Thrones actor impressed her on set.
“He’s a doll,” she said of the actor. “I call him like, the sweetest barbarian there ever was.
“He’s so amazing in this part,” she added. “He’s what [original Conan creator] Robert E. Howard [imagined]… Jason looks like he just stepped out of the pages of the comic book. Jason looks like he was born to battle with a big sword.”

Next week, actress Rose McGowan will be appearing on the big screen as Marique, a beautiful and deadly witch in director Marcus Nispel’s Conan: The Barbarian. However, not too long ago, McGowan was set to headline her own swords-and-sandals epic spinning out of the world of Conan as the title character in Robert Rodriguez’s Red Sonja. Rodriguez has said in the past that the movie never happened because of rights and financing issues, but McGowan revealed in a recent interview in support of Conan: The Barbarian that “massive nerve damage” in her arm ultimately prevented her from playing the “She-Devil with a Sword.”
I had three surgeries on [my elbow] and they took part of my bone out. I was paralyzed, except for the ends of my fingers. And, over the course of a year, it got progressively worse. It was just massive nerve damage. So, if I hurt it again, there’s nothing more they can do. So, something’s that really sword-heavy, the odds of me getting hurt are pretty strong. I’ll still do battle stuff. I love doing stunts, it’s my favorite thing. I always get hurt, but I have a blast. But, I need to not tip the scales because paralysis isn’t really worth it. Not worth the movie… It would have been dope. Honestly, I would have killed it. It is a pity.

Chelsea Lately’s official youtube channel has posted the video of Rose McGowan’s interview. You can watch it below. Rose is adorable!
She may be almost entirely unrecognizable, but yes, that is Rose McGowan rocking the porcelain skin, minimal leather outfit and, well, receding hairline in the trailer for Conan the Barbarian. She stars as the evil Marique, a powerful sorceress and the daughter of the ruthless Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang), Conan’s (Jason Momoa) archenemy.
With the film’s August 19th release on the horizon, McGowan hit San Diego Comic-Con to help spread the word. She dishes on all of the details including what it took to turn her into the character we see on screen, Marique’s weapon of choice, her daddy issues, as well as a moment between her and Lang that had to be cut from the film, for the fear of pushing a testy issue too far.
Before wrapping up, we revisit the much-discussed possibility of her playing Red Sonja on the big screen. The outlook’s been grim for quite a while and now McGowan 100% confirms it: She will not play Red Sonja. Hear all about that and, of course, McGowan’s experience working on Conan the Barbarian in the video interview below.
