Project Spotlight

Dawn (2013, short, drama)
Directed by Rose McGowan
Starring Tara Barr, Reiley McClendon and Hannah Marks

"I just finished my first piece for RSA Black Dog, which is Ridley Scott's commercial music video company. I directed a 20-minute short with amazing actors. It was a really amazing project to do, and I felt really comfortable doing it, more so than I ever have acting."

Well, on the previous post I mentioned wondering what is happening in the world of Red Sonja and today we actually got an update on the status of the film… And it ain’t good, guys. 🙁 Empire spoke to Red Sonja producer Joe Gatta, who confirmed that the film has been post-poned and will not be filming until 2010.

Red Sonja probably won’t happen until next year, as far as making it goes. So we want to launch Conan and reinvent the franchise.” – Joe Gatta

This probably means that it won’t be hitting the big screens for a couple of years. What a bummer! I know myself and all of Rose’s fans have been looking forward to the film since its launching at the Comic-Con a year ago. Here’s to hoping that Rose will shoot another film before Red Sonja. I truly miss seeing her on the silver screen! :depressed:

For more revelations about Conan and Red Sonja, pick up the next issue of Empire, on sale May 28. I will be sure to make scans for the site once the magazine is out.

Having just finished listening to Robert Rodriguez and Henry Selick talk about their experiences making 3D films, I can’t very well be expected to write up a complete accounting so quickly. (A fellow has to eat – and see the next movie on his agenda – after all.) BUT I thought you might like to see a few snaps from the panel discussion as a kind of photo teaser.

The sequence shown here came towards the end of the proceeding, when one of the audience questioners asked if someone on the right-hand side of the auditorium cared to comment about the progress of the Red Sonja film.

(Curious, since this had nothing to do with the topic at hand.)

Well, a glimpse of the lady in pink who piped up to answer the question struck a familiar chord. She seemed oddly reminiscent of someone with a gun for a body part.

Rose McGowan, who has never been afraid to get physical for her roles, told Access Hollywood at the Broadway premiere of Jane Fonda’s 33 Variations that she will be back in action soon to prep for the part after being sidelined by a trip the operating room.

“I just had a big surgery on my elbow and on my wrist, so I can start my training again,” she revealed.

The character was previously portrayed by Brigitte Nielsen in the 1985 sword and sorcery action film, aptly titled Red Sonja. The film co-starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, who at the time was still riding high on the movie trail he blazed with his role as Conan the Barbarian.

McGowan’s years of on-set bravery, she admits, is what sent her to go under the knife. Though she brushes off her setback as a typical work hazard and “just damage from doing my own stunts.”

Rosie O’Donnell, wearing a skirt with ankle-high Doc Martens, was nearby answering reporters’ questions, which ranged from her thoughts on Donald Trump’s finances (“I have no thoughts about it”), Madonna’s new boyfriend (“she should make herself happy and it looks like she does”), and Michelle Obama’s sleeveless dresses (“she should be sleeveless all the time!”).

She exclaimed: “And look, Rose McGowan is here!”

Ms. McGowan recently had elbow surgery and was still recovering. “I can’t even hold a fork right now, so I have to keep doing my physical therapy and work up to my sword,” she said. (Ms. McGowan is working on the film Red Sonja, about red-haired comic book hero who carries a sword.)

Then, prompted by another round of the theater’s lights, the actress said “Oh, I guess really do have to go in,” and teetered on inside.

1. Millennium Films and Emmett/Furla Films acquired the rights to produce and distribute a feature film in 2006

2. Filming got pushed because Robert Rodriguez (producer/unofficial director) took David N. White (writer) screenplay and made his own draft. It is unknown if they are filming know.

3. David N. White’s Script was leaked and got a bad review this could be the reason why Robert made his own draft.

4. Because of his commitments, Rodriguez wasn’t able to direct Sonja and instead offered it to his friend, Douglas Aarniokoski. He did promise that he’ll be extremely hands-on as a producer to the extent that it’ll basically be unofficial co-directing. Rodriguez had been trying to get Red Sonja on the big screen for years and, coincidentally, the script came across McGowan’s desk at exactly the right time.

5. Rose McGowan (Red Sonja) was offered the part and bought Robert along and he bought Douglas (official director) along.

I am happy to report that we finally have something new regarding Red Sonja! The big news is that the movie has been pushed back and is now due in 2010, instead of 2009. Which is unfortunate because I know we are all craving for some new Rose material, especially as her Nip/Tuck appearance is also not due until 2010.

Now more details of the story have emerged courtesy of, who got ahold of a new poster and a story breakdown for the upcoming flick.

It seems that the movie will follow Sonja’s transformation from a victim of savagery to the “Red Goddess’ Blade of Justice”. She teams with mischievous childhood friend Cyrus and mentor Ozzyus to hack her way through the forces of evil Kulan Gath and exact revenge for the brutal slaying of her family. FX came out with a new press release today announcing the return of Nip/Tuck on January 6, 2009, and this appears:

Guest stars include Sharon Gless, Portia de Rossi, AnnaLynne McCord, Bradley Cooper, John Schneider, Jennifer Coolidge, Morgan Fairchild and Katee Sackoff.

So it looks like Sackoff will portray Dr. Theodora ‘Teddy’ Lowe for the continuation of the sixth season so we won’t get Rose’s episodes until the seventh season, which kicks off January 2010. Katee will then be replaced by Rose.

For all those who have been asking us whether or not Red Sonja is being filmed at the moment – unfortunately, we don’t know. It seems like there’s endless speculation regarding Rose’s recent projects and no real facts. There has not been any actual Red Sonja news for months and no additional cast has been announced. So, unfortunately, we have no information of what the status of the project is at the moment.

With the upcoming Red Sonja film starring Rose McGowan hitting theaters next year, is it too early to start talking about a possible sequel? Not if you’re Splash Page!

Catching up with director Douglas Aarniokoski, we asked if there were any preliminary thoughts on any follow-ups or other films from the Red Sonja universe of characters, and while Aarniokoski obviously wouldn’t (or quite possibly, couldn’t) elaborate, he did drop some clues. “I mean, if we start to talk about that, I start to give away the third act,” he said. “Yes, let’s just say yes. It’s definitely got franchise written all over it.”

CS/SHH!: What drew you both to the character of Red Sonja?

Rose McGowan: Well, I thought Red Sonja was incredibly badass. The studio brought me the script. I got really excited about it. I’d been getting such boring scripts and after doing Cherry in Planet Terror, I was really in a quite a deep depression — I’m not going to lie — at least workwise. I came home and said, “I really want to do this movie. It’s kind of great. Look at these comic books, you ever heard of this person? This is insane!” And then…
