When the news broke this morning that actress Rose McGowan had joined the cast of Marcus Nispel’s upcoming Conan movie as “an evil half-human/half-witch,” one question seemed to be on the minds of fans: What about Red Sonja?
Originally tagged to play the female barbarian back in 2008, McGowan reported in August 2009 that Red Sonja had been delayed. The character was rumored to make a cameo in Conan, since she made her first appearance in Conan the Barbarian comics, but today’s casting news certainly makes such a cameo difficult — if not altogether impossible.
Fortunately, MTV News checked in with Red Sonja producer Robert Rodriguez during the recent South By Southwest Film Festival to find out where the project is at these days.

According to Variety, Rose McGowan is joining Marcus Nispel’s (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2003), Friday the 13th, 2009) Conan revamp! I am excited Rose is announced to a new project but I already feel this is gonna create some confusion for some people.
She is set to be playing an evil half-human/half-witch in the movie, not Red Sonja, whom we’ve all eagerly been waiting for since we were teased with the Red Sonja imagery back in 2008. Red Sonja first appeared in Conan the Barbarian and while the character will not take part in the new film, it’s kinda cool Rose will somehow get into this Conan-universe. But what does this mean for Red Sonja?
Back in August of 2009, Rose said this:
To clarify press reports: Red Sonja is delayed. I pulled out of doing it in ‘09. Not permanently. Hopefully will follow Conan.
I am still contracted to do it Red Sonja. Hopefully Filming in ‘10 not ‘09
Only time will tell the fate of Sonja. I guess if Conan succeeds at the box office a Red Sonja film (albeit that new character confusion) might be a smart move. But if the film doesn’t, well we just might be hearing the swan song, like we did with Barbarella. It definitely won’t be being released this year and given our run of luck with the stand stilled films these few years, I’d highly doubt filming either – unless by some chance later in the year. But I’m not an expert, just giving my guess. We’ll of course research and let you know if we find out any other details!

Rumors have been circling for months that Rose McGowan may appear in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, the feature-length version of the trailer that originally appeared in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse. Fans have been speculating that Cherry Darling might appear in the Machete movie. We made a conscious decision to not report in the rumors because there’s been so much project gossip in the past few years – that never actually ended up happening in reality. However, now the respectable news outlet Variety reports that Rose McGowan is indeed part of the cast that also includes Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin and Michelle Rodriguez.
The story centers on a former Mexican police officer who turns the tables on the masterminds who double-crossed him. Rodriguez, who wrote the screenplay, co-directs with Ethan Maniquis.
Here’s to hoping that it is true and that we will be seeing McGowan in another Rodriguez picture very soon!
THR also reports that Amy Smart has joined the cast of Dylan’s Wake, which also includes Nick Stahl and Rose McGowan. Stahl plays a young man, working in a funeral parlor, who is trying to unravel a 10-year-old mystery.
At this time last year, Rose McGowan told us how excited she was to be kicking butt and working under the direction of her fiancé Robert Rodriguez in the she-devil comic book adaptation Red Sonja, but it turns out a serious injury has brought the production to a standstill.
“I had wrist and elbow surgery and they took part of my elbow out. I had really bad nerve damage from doing stunts – I do a lot of my own stunts,” McGowan recently told Tarts. “I could no longer use my arm, but now I can hold a fork and drive so we’re working our way up. It’ll probably be another six months of rehab, but it’s the price you pay for being really limber and being able to do back flips!”

Rose McGowan announced on Twitter that she will be in Iowa to film indie movie Dylan’s Wake. Filming starts August 31. Here’s what she said:
Breaking news!! I’m heading to Iowa to film a movie called Dylan’s Wake. Very well written indie. my co-star is Nick Stahl – so talented. directed by Omar Naim who did The Final Cut, which I loved
Congratulations to Rose! I believe I’m speaking for all the fans when I say that I am super excited about her announcement!
She also posted the following regarding Red Sonja:
To clarify press reports: Red Sonja is delayed. I pulled out of doing it in ’09. Not permanently. Hopefully will follow Conan.
I am still contracted to do it Red Sonja. Hopefully Filming in ’10 not ’09
From Rose’s Twitter:
Just this once i’ll address questions about Red Sonja & others; i was meant to do in ’08. Major personal &private; reasons I pulled out. Starting 2 want to work again. Sometimes real life fucking sucks. That’s all. God bless us survivors.
We hope things are better for her now. All the best to Rose!
The ‘She-devil with a sword- last seen on out screens as Brigitte Nielsen in Richard Fleischer’s shonky in out multiplexes as soon as we thought. Set to be directed by Douglas Aarniokoski and star Rose McGowan, with Robert Rodriguez producing, the project is now on hiatus.
“Because of certain issues and the economy, we had to change our plan a bit,” admits executive producer Joe Gatta, who’s also producing the Conan reboot.”It’s frustrating because we thought we’d make the movie last year, before Conan.”
Gatta is still confident Red Sonja will go before cameras in 2010, and he can confirm this will be an origin stoy that ignores Fleisher’s shaky stub at the flame-haired warrioress and goes straight to the source: Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith’s comic-book character, despite the fact that she started out as a Conan comic-book spin-off.
Gatta is confident of the character’s stansalone appeal. “She’s beautiful and sexy, and she kicks ass! Although you have to be really careful so it’s not campy. You want to make it real. Make her convicingly tough. And I think we have a script that’s cracked it.”
DJ EXPECTED: Late 2010 TBC
Well, on the previous post I mentioned wondering what is happening in the world of Red Sonja and today we actually got an update on the status of the film… And it ain’t good, guys. 🙁 Empire spoke to Red Sonja producer Joe Gatta, who confirmed that the film has been post-poned and will not be filming until 2010.
“Red Sonja probably won’t happen until next year, as far as making it goes. So we want to launch Conan and reinvent the franchise.” – Joe Gatta
This probably means that it won’t be hitting the big screens for a couple of years. What a bummer! I know myself and all of Rose’s fans have been looking forward to the film since its launching at the Comic-Con a year ago. Here’s to hoping that Rose will shoot another film before Red Sonja. I truly miss seeing her on the silver screen! :depressed:

Robert Rodriguez confirms what we pretty much already knew: that Barbarella, which was to Rose McGowan, has been scrapped. Too bad that there’s no mention of Red Sonja, I’d really love to know what’s happening with the film. MTV Movies Blog reports:
Like the tides and Lindsay Lohan’s film career, movie projects come and go. One project we’re particularly sad to see go bye-bye is Robert Rodriguez’s planned adaptation of the schlocky, sexy 1968 sci-fi flick, Barbarella.
Yes, MTV News learned exclusively during a conversation with the director to promote the Blu-ray version of Sin City that his Barbarella is officially dead.
The film had been in development for years. Back in 2007, Universal Pictures was set to make the picture with Rose McGowan taking over the lead role from original star Jane Fonda. But the budget was said to have swelled past $80 million dollars and Universal balked. Rodriguez went in search of alternate financing.
“It came to the point where [a company from] Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I ever would have had for a movie,” Rodriguez told MTV News. “But I had to shoot it in Germany and post it in Germany. Nothing against Germany, but I have five kids and I was like, ‘God, I don’t know if we can do that. I don’t know if I can be away that long.’”

Having just finished listening to Robert Rodriguez and Henry Selick talk about their experiences making 3D films, I can’t very well be expected to write up a complete accounting so quickly. (A fellow has to eat – and see the next movie on his agenda – after all.) BUT I thought you might like to see a few snaps from the panel discussion as a kind of photo teaser.
The sequence shown here came towards the end of the proceeding, when one of the audience questioners asked if someone on the right-hand side of the auditorium cared to comment about the progress of the Red Sonja film.
(Curious, since this had nothing to do with the topic at hand.)
Well, a glimpse of the lady in pink who piped up to answer the question struck a familiar chord. She seemed oddly reminiscent of someone with a gun for a body part.
