Robert Rodriguez confirms what we pretty much already knew: that Barbarella, which was to Rose McGowan, has been scrapped. Too bad that there’s no mention of Red Sonja, I’d really love to know what’s happening with the film. MTV Movies Blog reports:
Like the tides and Lindsay Lohan’s film career, movie projects come and go. One project we’re particularly sad to see go bye-bye is Robert Rodriguez’s planned adaptation of the schlocky, sexy 1968 sci-fi flick, Barbarella.
Yes, MTV News learned exclusively during a conversation with the director to promote the Blu-ray version of Sin City that his Barbarella is officially dead.
The film had been in development for years. Back in 2007, Universal Pictures was set to make the picture with Rose McGowan taking over the lead role from original star Jane Fonda. But the budget was said to have swelled past $80 million dollars and Universal balked. Rodriguez went in search of alternate financing.
“It came to the point where [a company from] Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I ever would have had for a movie,” Rodriguez told MTV News. “But I had to shoot it in Germany and post it in Germany. Nothing against Germany, but I have five kids and I was like, ‘God, I don’t know if we can do that. I don’t know if I can be away that long.’”

CS/SHH!: What drew you both to the character of Red Sonja?
Rose McGowan: Well, I thought Red Sonja was incredibly badass. The studio brought me the script. I got really excited about it. I’d been getting such boring scripts and after doing Cherry in Planet Terror, I was really in a quite a deep depression — I’m not going to lie — at least workwise. I came home and said, “I really want to do this movie. It’s kind of great. Look at these comic books, you ever heard of this person? This is insane!” And then…
Luckily G4 put up the interview they aired of Miss Rose from Comic-Con, in it she states that Red Sonja will begin filming at the end of September and next week she begins training about 4-5 hours a day. She will be learning sword fighting, trick horse riding, free running, acrobatics and more. “Pretty much I’ll be able to control the universe on my horse when I’m done.” she joked. When asked about Barbarella, Robert says they had to push that back because he’s working on something else (which is why he will not be directing Red Sonja), but this one came in. So who knows, while I see it unlikely Barbarella will ever really get a chance again you honestly never know! Check out the whole interview below (HQ version here). Captures coming up shortly.
Check out one of the first transcripts of today’s panel for Red Sonja from Spout Blog. It’s very funny (Robert says he fell for Rose after she called him “Count Fuckula”) and gives lots of interesting details on the upcoming flick as well as exciting news that a Planet Terror “sequel” – in the form of a trailer attached to the Machete film is possibly gonna happen. Here’s to hoping, as I’d kill for more Cherry Darling! And get ready for those Sin City rumors to fly again, as Rose teases the fans once more and Robert announces there are scripts for Sin City 2 & 3 (“They have a script, waiting for Frank Miller to be done with The Spirit.”) The two also discuss a bit about Barbarella as well and I think it’s a safe bet to say that film is unfortunately not gonna happen. Check out some highlights below, and read on for the full article.
Robert: Rose has been working out 3 hours a day for Red Sonja and is about to start sword training with the Wachowskis’ guy on Monday. Rose will do her own stunts in RS.
Rose: “In Death Proof, the face being slammed against the plexi was mine. I smashed my cheekbone and almost had a concussion, but it wouldn’t look right otherwise. I’m gonna end up like a boxer at 38, but I do as much as I can.”
Rose: From a really early age, being into empowerment, being a feminist, and loving the underdog, and really, in my life, being one. So, I brought it home and said, “I’m really interested in female vengeance!” And then I’m like, “Oh god, therapist…”
This movie is going to be hard, its gonna be cold, its gonna be dirty, bloody. But I’m up for it. (Crowd cheers.)
I keep thinking Ill do a Jane Austen movie, and I said, “Would you ever do a Jane Austen movie?” and Robert said, “Could there be a dead body in it?”
When I was really little, I saw La Femme Nikita, and that’s what I wanted to be when I grew up. I think Nikita would be proud.
Robert: We tried to do Barbarella, and that didnt work. She came into the kitchen with a script for Red Sonja and said, “I really like this script, don’t know if you’ve heard of it…” (Crowd likes this.) She was like, “They want to meet me, Do you think its a good property?”
We decided to do this instead of Barbarella, which we did have funding for, we were gonna do it for $70 million in Germany, but there were other projects…
Rose McGowan and Robert Rodriguez are still together – professionally and personally, sources tell People.
The actress is starring in three of her fiancé’s upcoming projects – Barbarella, Red Sonja and Woman in Chains! – despite reports to the contrary, according to her rep.
“The production of all three films is moving forward with Rose to star,” the rep tells People exclusively.
As for claims that the couple have called off their engagement, a source close to McGowan says, “She and Robert are fine.”
Last August, it was all but assured that Grindhouse babe Rose McGowan was set to star as the title character, an ultra-hot space vixen, in Robert Rodriguez’s remake of Barbarella.
Or so we thought.
Because soon came the budget disputes. And the posturing. And the claims that Universal didn’t want McGowan at all, preferring instead a bigger name actress like Jessica Alba or Nicole Kidman.
Turns out, we got it right the first time, McGowan insisted, telling MTV News that she was still very much signed on to play the lead in the upcoming film.
“[The news that I was out] was really irritating because I know all the people over there and obviously it wasn’t true. It was very malicious and there was no proof,” McGowan said of the rumors. “Oftentimes these things have basis in truth but this didn’t. I have contracts to prove it.”
Robert Rodriguez tells the IESB that Barbarella might be headed back to Universal within a week:
Just last week The New York Observer broke the news that Universal had ditched their plans for Robert Rodriguez’s Barbarella. According to the paper it all had to do with the casting of Rose McGowan but Robert has denied the reports claiming that it had to do with the skyrocketing budget.
During last Fridays’ Spike TV’s Scream Awards Rodriguez told IESB that, “we will know in a week about Barbarella and it might go back to Universal.â€
Beware… The article below includes some rather mean spirited gossip regarding Rose McGowan. We are posting this because in it Robert Rodriguez discusses Universal Studios’ decision to back out from backing Barbarella. He also talks about his reasons for casting Rose in the title role, finally confirming that it actually belongs to her! Now, lets just hope that another studio will back this picture and fully support Robert’s true vision!
Sin City director Robert Rodriguez is letting his heart get in the way of his better judgment with his forthcoming big-budget remake of Barbarella, a source with knowledge of the production told the Transom.
Universal Studios has backed out of backing the movie, whose budget the source pegged at nearly $100 million, because Mr. Rodriguez has insisted on casting his new fiancé, Rose McGowan, in the lead role, famously played by Jane Fonda in the 1968 original directed by Ms. Fonda’s then-husband, Roger Vadim.
Wow, wow, wow! Elle is reporting that Rose McGowan will indeed portray the iconic Barbarella in Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming film! Read on and stay tuned for a more ‘official’ announcement!
This just in from our editors in Milan: A highly reliable source tells Elle.com exclusively that Rose McGowan is slipping into a fur bikini and major bouffant to take on the title role in the remake of Barbarella. Robert Rodriguez, who left his wife after falling for McGowan on the Grindhouse set, is directing and has cast his love in the part made famous by Jane Fonda. While the rumor mill placed everyone from Halle Berry to Kate Beckinsale and Nicole Kidman in the role of Queen of the Galaxy, it seems he’s found the perfect Barbarella in McGowan.
The newly blond Rose partied it up on Friday night until 6am with Domenico and Stefano following their Dolce & Gabanna show. Only a few short hours later, she had to hightail it to the airport for a flight to L.A., presumably to get back to the set. We can’t wait to see her undress in zero gravity as the opening credits roll…
Okay, here’s the deal. There truly might be nothing to this, but you never know, so here we go with the facts as I know them. I chatted for a bit with Jessica Alba yesterday (stop drooling, you look like an idiot) and we were talking about her action chops as an actress. Basically, she said she really wants to do another big action role, so I threw out Barbarella as a possibility. She paused and simply said, “Isn’t that going to Rose? I think it is.â€
So what have we learned from this? Probably nothing. Jessica Alba has most likely read, like we all have, that Robert Rodriguez may be considering his Planet Terror star for the role.
Or maybe Alba’s got some inside info thanks to her relationship with Rodriguez? Bottom line? I don’t know. Just something to think about. At the very least, you tell us what you think. Who should be Barbarella: Alba, McGowan, Estelle Getty? The floor is yours.
