Project Spotlight

Dawn (2013, short, drama)
Directed by Rose McGowan
Starring Tara Barr, Reiley McClendon and Hannah Marks

"I just finished my first piece for RSA Black Dog, which is Ridley Scott's commercial music video company. I directed a 20-minute short with amazing actors. It was a really amazing project to do, and I felt really comfortable doing it, more so than I ever have acting."

Conan the Barbarian’s Rose McGowan was raised by drag queens, has a lesbian posse, and gets twitchy in straight crowds. Is it any wonder that she’s a better marriage equality activist than her gay friends?

The Advocate has published an awesome interview with Rose. And you can read the full article in our library. Its guaranteed to make you fall even more in love with Rose!

Are you bisexual?
No. I disappoint myself. I’ve never even kissed a girl. Isn’t that funny? The girls I think are cute look like guys, but then I think, But if they open their shirt, they’ll have breasts. You know that guy Brad [Goreski], who was Rachel Zoe’s assistant? I’d be attracted to a girl version of him.

As a vocal supporter of marriage equality, you participated in the No H8 Campaign.
My sister is gay. Before I broke up with my fiancé, it seemed absurd to have my sister at a wedding that she couldn’t have if she wanted to. I would still have great hesitation about getting married. I’d feel like such a hypocrite, walking down the aisle past all of my best friends who can’t. I was furious with how horribly the whole Prop. 8 campaign was run in California. It broke my heart the night Prop. 8 passed. I’m out there on Santa Monica Blvd. with crowds of people, and the world is watching, but all the anti-Prop. 8 protestors did was put up the same non-telegenic people with the same speeches, not understanding how it works. Their money was totally mismanaged. I really want California to get it together like New York has.

Being an actor is a dangerous business. Just ask Rose McGowan, who stars in the Conan the Barbarian reboot that opens Aug. 19. It’s her first film in years, despite the fact that at Comic-Con 2008 she was touted as the star of Simon West’s planned 2009 return to the Red Sonja tale. That one went by the wayside when McGowan trashed herself on the set of Planet Terror.

“Look at my elbow,” she said at the L.A. press junket for Conan. “I’ve had three surgeries on it and have had part of it taken out. That was from a stunt gone wrong, where I did a handspring backwards. So, during the course of that year it became basically paralyzed except for half of two of my fingers. After three surgeries with massive nerve damage and the bone being taken out and a year of rehab, they’re like, ‘You could go do a sword movie, but we can’t do anything more with your arm if you hurt it.’ As dope as it would’ve been, I would really rather not go through life with one arm that’s paralyzed and in constant pain.”

And that’s not even the end of it. When McGowan was finally ready to return to the job, she got injured yet again. She made it through Conan unscathed, but not for long.

' Conan the Barbarian' Articles
Article written on July 25, 2011 by Mycahe-mail

Meeting Rose McGowan over the weekend at Comic-Con, she instinctively offered her left hand first. Having injured her other arm weeks ago in the goriest window-related accident I’ve ever heard, she’d flown into San Diego to promote this summer’s Conan the Barbarian, touted as one of the bloodiest action pics of the year. But to hear her tell it, Conan the Barbarian’s got nothing on McGowan’s last few years when it comes to struggle and pain — and yet, she credits the summer swords ‘n’ sorcery pic with changing her mind about quitting Hollywood.

McGowan points to a number of events that brought her to the brink of retirement a few years ago: “Mean directors,” major injuries, family illness. She was to star in updates of Red Sonja and Barbarella, both with former partner Robert Rodriguez, before the pair split and both projects fell apart, one by her choice, the other not. After two years “out of the game,” she took the role of Marique, a half-witch, half-human villainess with a freaky look and an even freakier psyche, in Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian — and the hard-R fantasy actioner re-ignited something within.

Movieline spoke with McGowan in San Diego about the injuries that led to her pulling out of Red Sonja, the reason why Rodriguez’s Barbarella remake stalled, how playing the witch with seductive claws and serious daddy issues in Conan revived her passion for acting, and why she might yet move to a farm in Italy in the near future.

'The Pastor's Wife' News & Rumors
Article written on July 17, 2011 by Riikkae-mail

McGowaniacs have been speculating over Rose’s next project after she tweeted that she was working in Vancouver, BC and posted a photo of herself wearing a wedding dress earlier this month. Now details have emerged that McGowan is currently filming a TV movie titled The Pastor’s Wife, in which Rose plays a real-life woman named Mary Winkler. The real Winkler was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the 2006 shooting death of her husband, Matthew Winkler, the pulpit minister at the Fourth Street Church of Christ in the small town of Selmer, Tennessee. Michael Shanks (Stargate SG-1) plays Matthew Winkler in the movie. Says Shanks:

“Doing a TV movie with Rose McGowan (Conan the Barbarian, Charmed) called The Pastor’s Wife. Based on a book, true life story etc.. I play pastor Matthew Winkler. Rose will play my character’s wife, Mary Winkler. If you read about the story, the synopsis becomes self evident.”

The film began production on July 11, based out of 1950 Franklin Street Vancouver, home of Front Street Pictures.

Sounds like an intriguing project! Many thanks to maxpower03 for the detective work. Further details on the case and the real Mary Winkler are available on Wikipedia.

A fantastic new interview has been added in the library (and an accompanying photoshoot picture in the gallery!), courtesy of La Vie en Ruffian. Rose discusses fashion, skin care, classic films, art and Betty Boop, among other things. It really is a great read so check it out!

Totally sweet is dull. You need to have some pathos for something to be interesting. Whenever I play a character who is lying, the audience has to know I am lying, but it still has to be real enough so the other character doesn’t know I am lying. The thing is, in a film as opposed to theatre, the camera is tight and close on your face. A tiny eye movement can be very evocative even though it is small. I try not to think about the process too much. The life unexamined. I am not a method actor—I think it sounds ridiculous when actors talk about their process. I don’t even like to call myself an actor. In fact, I was held up in Romania because I wrote student on my immigration entrance form.
