Project Spotlight

Dawn (2013, short, drama)
Directed by Rose McGowan
Starring Tara Barr, Reiley McClendon and Hannah Marks

"I just finished my first piece for RSA Black Dog, which is Ridley Scott's commercial music video company. I directed a 20-minute short with amazing actors. It was a really amazing project to do, and I felt really comfortable doing it, more so than I ever have acting."

The article and photoshoot for Prestige is now available on the magazine’s official website, or alternatively can be read in our library.

In the interview Rose goes on to talk about her role in Conan, the TV movie she’s been filming (if you’ve been following her on twitter you are surely curious about it!), and her image in Hollywood.

Well, if you actually think about it, I’ve never been arrested, I’ve never been busted for drugs, never got arrested for drunk driving, never gotten out of the car without my underwear on. There’s actually nothing that I have done in my life that would actually fit the bad-girl image. That’s the funniest part of it all, and all of my friends know. That’s why they laugh.

Rose McGowan’s 2-year-old Pomeranian leads a charmed life.

Not only is Sasquatch one of the apples of her eyes (the Conan the Barbarian star also has a Boston terrier named Happy), but she manages to get away with everything, too.

“Sasquatch isn’t really great with toes. She likes to bite my toes and my hands and steal my underwear,” McGowan told People at Wednesday’s InStyle Summer Soiree in West Hollywood. “Happy is [better behaved].”

Happy, 11, and McGowan found each other two years ago. McGowan’s Boston terrier Fester had recently died, and her beloved first Boston, Bug, was not doing well. So McGowan turned to the Boston Brigade rescue and adopted Happy.

“I got him because I knew Bug wanted to die, and it was like she didn’t want to leave me without knowing I would be taken care of,” McGowan tells Modern Dog in its summer issue. “It gave her peace, or something.”

When Bug died last June, McGowan decided to rescue Sasquatch, a mini-Pomeranian who once belonged to a hoarder. Sasquatch, Happy and McGowan are all better off together.

Rose McGowan is featured in The New York Times discussing her love of the Hollywood golden age in the 1930s and ’40s. She was photographed with her beloved RKO letters (that we’ve often heard about!) and discussed the film studio a bit. Its a swell little article! Read it in the library and view the image in the gallery.

Ms. McGowan is the rare actress who manages to land somewhere between femme fatale and madcap heiress. (She’s quick to quote Jessica Rabbit: “I’m not bad. I’m just drawn that way.”) If there is any actress she identifies with, it’s Barbara Stanwyck. “I love how she could play sexy and funny, and how she never stopped working,” she said. She also noted that she recently suffered an injury trying to pick grapefruit in her backyard in high heels.

Last night was the big Hollywood premiere of Conan the Barbarian. Rose McGowan was in attendance – showing off how gorgeous she is and playing up her glamour to the max (quite the opposite of her character Marique!) in a bold sequined dress with blue and green. Pretty pink lips, side swept curls and gold accessories completed her ensemble. Simply divine!

Check out the first photographs in the gallery by clicking on the previews below.

On Wednesday, Rose McGowan stepped out at the 10th Annual InStyle Summer Soiree. Rose looked stunning in an orange wrap cocktail dress with teal accessories and snakeskin shoes and clutch. Her hair was styled straight which I think looks fabulous on her!

Conan the Barbarian’s Rose McGowan was raised by drag queens, has a lesbian posse, and gets twitchy in straight crowds. Is it any wonder that she’s a better marriage equality activist than her gay friends?

The Advocate has published an awesome interview with Rose. And you can read the full article in our library. Its guaranteed to make you fall even more in love with Rose!

Are you bisexual?
No. I disappoint myself. I’ve never even kissed a girl. Isn’t that funny? The girls I think are cute look like guys, but then I think, But if they open their shirt, they’ll have breasts. You know that guy Brad [Goreski], who was Rachel Zoe’s assistant? I’d be attracted to a girl version of him.

As a vocal supporter of marriage equality, you participated in the No H8 Campaign.
My sister is gay. Before I broke up with my fiancé, it seemed absurd to have my sister at a wedding that she couldn’t have if she wanted to. I would still have great hesitation about getting married. I’d feel like such a hypocrite, walking down the aisle past all of my best friends who can’t. I was furious with how horribly the whole Prop. 8 campaign was run in California. It broke my heart the night Prop. 8 passed. I’m out there on Santa Monica Blvd. with crowds of people, and the world is watching, but all the anti-Prop. 8 protestors did was put up the same non-telegenic people with the same speeches, not understanding how it works. Their money was totally mismanaged. I really want California to get it together like New York has.

' Conan the Barbarian' 'Red Sonja' Video Vault
Article written on August 12, 2011 by Mycahe-mail

Next week, actress Rose McGowan will be appearing on the big screen as Marique, a beautiful and deadly witch in director Marcus Nispel’s Conan: The Barbarian. However, not too long ago, McGowan was set to headline her own swords-and-sandals epic spinning out of the world of Conan as the title character in Robert Rodriguez’s Red Sonja. Rodriguez has said in the past that the movie never happened because of rights and financing issues, but McGowan revealed in a recent interview in support of Conan: The Barbarian that “massive nerve damage” in her arm ultimately prevented her from playing the “She-Devil with a Sword.”

I had three surgeries on [my elbow] and they took part of my bone out. I was paralyzed, except for the ends of my fingers. And, over the course of a year, it got progressively worse. It was just massive nerve damage. So, if I hurt it again, there’s nothing more they can do. So, something’s that really sword-heavy, the odds of me getting hurt are pretty strong. I’ll still do battle stuff. I love doing stunts, it’s my favorite thing. I always get hurt, but I have a blast. But, I need to not tip the scales because paralysis isn’t really worth it. Not worth the movie… It would have been dope. Honestly, I would have killed it. It is a pity.

' Conan the Barbarian' Articles
Article written on July 25, 2011 by Mycahe-mail

Meeting Rose McGowan over the weekend at Comic-Con, she instinctively offered her left hand first. Having injured her other arm weeks ago in the goriest window-related accident I’ve ever heard, she’d flown into San Diego to promote this summer’s Conan the Barbarian, touted as one of the bloodiest action pics of the year. But to hear her tell it, Conan the Barbarian’s got nothing on McGowan’s last few years when it comes to struggle and pain — and yet, she credits the summer swords ‘n’ sorcery pic with changing her mind about quitting Hollywood.

McGowan points to a number of events that brought her to the brink of retirement a few years ago: “Mean directors,” major injuries, family illness. She was to star in updates of Red Sonja and Barbarella, both with former partner Robert Rodriguez, before the pair split and both projects fell apart, one by her choice, the other not. After two years “out of the game,” she took the role of Marique, a half-witch, half-human villainess with a freaky look and an even freakier psyche, in Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian — and the hard-R fantasy actioner re-ignited something within.

Movieline spoke with McGowan in San Diego about the injuries that led to her pulling out of Red Sonja, the reason why Rodriguez’s Barbarella remake stalled, how playing the witch with seductive claws and serious daddy issues in Conan revived her passion for acting, and why she might yet move to a farm in Italy in the near future.

[McGowan offers her left hand, pointing to her still-injured right forearm] I went through a window.
