Actress and gay rights activist Rose McGowan is still glowing over the announcement that the U.S. military policy “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – put into place by the Clinton administration in 1993 – was repealed in July, allowing openly homosexual men and women to serve in the armed forces.
“It’s amazing, and I think primarily how it’s been reacted [to] within the troops has been more inspirational than anything,” she told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column at amfAR’s Inspiration Gala Los Angeles to benefit the Foundation’s AIDS research programs. “My brother flies F16′s in the Air Force, and for him, it’s been a non-issue this entire time, and for most military people I know it’s the same. It’s us out here in the public that has a problem with it, which I think is a pity. Just like anything, it’s new and uncomfortable for them at first, and then it’s normal.”

Designer Kenneth Cole has created a new interpretation of the red ribbon, which has become a symbol for the 30-year battle against HIV/AIDS. Singers Ke$ha, Estelle, Cyndi Lauper, Skylar Grey and the actors Sarah Jessica Parker, Rose McGowan and Cheyenne Jackson have come together to show their support for AIDS awareness.
The stars will discuss in the PSA where and when they will be wearing their Cole-designed ribbons.
The red ribbon is now on sale for $5 at Kenneth Cole and Bloomingdale‘s stores, as well as on their websites. It can also be found at Gilt Groupe sites and House of Fraser stores in the UK.
Proceeds from the sale will be split amongst Awearness, The Kenneth Cole Foundation, MTV Staying Alive Foundation and amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research.
Variety reports that Sean Astin aka Sam in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (who was also in Encino Man with Rose!), Kevin Pollak, Taryn Manning and, coolest of all, Johnathon Schaech aka Xavier Red in The Doom Generation will round out the cast of Napa. The film, of course, stars Rose McGowan and will be directed by Michael Kerr. Napa follows Rose’s character Scarlett Harding, a woman recently who has recently returned from three Afghanistan military tours and is given the job of sheriff in her Napa hometown. The project is currently in production in Napa Valley.
