Next week, actress Rose McGowan will be appearing on the big screen as Marique, a beautiful and deadly witch in director Marcus Nispel’s Conan: The Barbarian. However, not too long ago, McGowan was set to headline her own swords-and-sandals epic spinning out of the world of Conan as the title character in Robert Rodriguez’s Red Sonja. Rodriguez has said in the past that the movie never happened because of rights and financing issues, but McGowan revealed in a recent interview in support of Conan: The Barbarian that “massive nerve damage” in her arm ultimately prevented her from playing the “She-Devil with a Sword.”
I had three surgeries on [my elbow] and they took part of my bone out. I was paralyzed, except for the ends of my fingers. And, over the course of a year, it got progressively worse. It was just massive nerve damage. So, if I hurt it again, there’s nothing more they can do. So, something’s that really sword-heavy, the odds of me getting hurt are pretty strong. I’ll still do battle stuff. I love doing stunts, it’s my favorite thing. I always get hurt, but I have a blast. But, I need to not tip the scales because paralysis isn’t really worth it. Not worth the movie… It would have been dope. Honestly, I would have killed it. It is a pity.
