According to Variety, Rose McGowan has signed to play the tragic B-movie staple Susan Cabot. The bio-pic subtly named Black Oasis, Rose is set be the lead, and will be directed Stephan Elliot (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert).
“Hit and Run” partners Hilary Shor and Tony Smith are producing. Shooting will begin this fall.
Based on a Premiere magazine article by John H. Richardson, Black Oasis is the story of Cabot’s rise on the B-circuit (she was a favorite of director Roger Corman) and her death at the hands of son Timothy, who bludgeoned her with a weightlifting bar when she was 59. Shor said the film was inspired by inside-Hollywood pics like Gods and Monsters and Sunset Blvd. “This is a story in the ‘stranger than fiction’ style of ‘Hollywood Babylon,’ and a little-known chapter in the seedy underbelly of that era,” Shor said.
Fortissimo Films will handle international sales, with Fortissimo principals Michael J. Werner and Wouter Barendrecht exec producing. Talks are under way with domestic distributors.
